We put out roughly 100 lbs of cereal rye and 20 lbs of crimson clover to the acre…..As cheap as the crimson is we just went ahead and bought a whole bag and sowed it a little heavy…..This is the first time the field has had anything done to it in about 2 years so we added 100 lbs of 33-0-0 per acre just to be safe…..There was still a good bit of undecomposed debris on the soil surface that needs to break down…..The "hoofing" action will really help once the deer start hitting it heavy....That’s the first fertilizer that has been added in 5 years

Thanks fellas…….I know its probably not up to Goatkiller standards but maybe it’ll be good enough to draw in a few deer this year…..

Looking good for sure, especially considering the timing of planting. Hope it draws all the deer in for you CNC. I don’t what to say Harold. You’ve proven it’s great with the right management and soil. Thanks……. I think it’ll work in any soil type……it’s just a matter of understanding the process that you need to take relative to your situation in order to be successful.

if I was a deer I would probably pass on it looks like it's already getting yellow and stems are getting tougher and less palatable by the day....
You'll see a deer in it for sure I see them on the side of the road, in the woods, in people's yards and flowerbeds in the City, hay fields, where else? Just about everywhere....
Good chance you'll see a couple deer there. Make sure you post a picture to prove me right.
Starting to look bad IMO. Maybe you'll get a rain. If not you'll still have stemy woody less palatable plants. FACTS.
Not impressed with sowing rye grass and it coming up..... I mean C'Mon Man! That's all it takes to be the local expert on Aldeer I reckon.

Wished all my plots looked like that and this point but I have not planted but two and glad I haven’t so far. When did cereal rye become rye grass? I guess I’m the dumbass that doesn’t know the difference but really I know that deer will eat either one. I can tell the blades of grass in the picture are too wide to be rye grass (Marshall or Jackson) so what variety is it? Wrens Abruzzi

I’m glad you said it. I see the same thing and thought the same thing. I just didn’t want to bust his bubble.

If you want to know the truth about that chit people talk about with the plot needing to be short to be tender and palatable for the deer blah, blah, blah……..Those are folks whose plots are just not fertile enough to actually have any growth occurring….The stuff about being short and palatable is just what you’re telling yourself to justify the outcome you’re getting.

Our plots never get that tall because the deer keep them mowed down. That is because we plant them for the deer to eat. If one of our plots had that much growth, I’d be very concerned about the lack of deer on our place. I will admit it is a tall beautiful green plot but I’m not into tall beautiful green plots. I’m into plots that the deer use and will keep utilizing. But that’s still a nice green plot.

I have food plots that look very similar and I’ve seen 14 and 16 respectively, in both plots on two hunts. They love that overgrown stuff that’s dry and not palatable apparently. One had 9 bucks in it at one time, including a 7 year old and a 5 year old P&Y. Guess we don’t know what we are doing though. I’m just poking fun at him. The passion he has for throw and mow is very impressive to me. As a retired farmer, I spent most of my life killing weeds and grasses to get crop fields ready to plant. And here CNC comes and has pretty much perfected the art of growing plots in weeds and grasses by mowing them. I will admit that I did try a small plot here at home and I actually got something to grow. But don’t tell CNC. I’m still a turn the dirt over guy and probably always will be. I do admire his passion though.

So Goat are you too stupid to know the difference between Rye Grass and Rye Grain or do you just have poor reading skills. CNC clearly posted he is planting Wrens Abruzzi Rye grain. He probably “when to college, at Auburn mind you. “

Marshal Rye could grow on the sun Just toss out 8-10 bags of it on the sun, with no prep whatsoever, and it would take it over in two months and completely block out all sunlight. With nothing there to beat it back, it would go to seed and you could spray 10 billion gallons of herbicide on the sun and you'd still never be able to kill it off.

AND the deer would slap tear it up. No, the deer would spontaneously combust from the heat, but that Marshal Rye Grass would be 100% fine, and grow like it was 55 degrees and raining every third day.

I wish mine looked like that right now Harold. I just bush hogged Sunday and planted in the rain Wednesday and drug the seed in. See how this works.

We finally got about an inch of rain earlier this week at the camp. Hopefully our plots will take off now with the good moisture.
