Got ours done for the first time last week in preparation for planting longleaf through NRCS EQIP program. Can definitely see how dangerous it could be if it got out of hand. Same here. We burned ours 4 weeks ago. Definitely an experience if you’ve never done it before. I wouldn’t want to do it unless there was someone there who knows what they are doing.

I’ve heard multiple stories the past few weeks of site preps getting out 3 days after ignitions. I’ve got a couple I need to get done that are surrounded by 5 year old loblolly’s that make me pretty nervous.

I’d venture to say it depends on the situation.
I’d be a little worried myself.

Black in very early on those site preps in these conditions.
The cleanest site prep I’ve seen, they sprayed back in the first of the summer and burned it in August. Reminded me of cnc mentioning the scorched earth scenario. There is some greenery out there now and they’ll plant in December. Crew was out of MS

We burned the new overgrown property in March. It ran through the pines, cutovers, etc. We sprayed at the end of July all the new overgrowth that came in after the March burn and also had 3 huge piles of stumps and trees we had taken down and pushed up when clearing our tracking and training fields. We just burned all the site prep fields and piles on 10/10/24. It looks like scorched earth now. All together this go around we burned probably 10 acres of fields and the piles. The first burn was 28 acres. We’ve not burned or touched the hardwoods. As of today I still have stumps smoldering from 10/10

Site prep burning can sometimes separate the men from the boys I hate doing site prep burns and have declared that I will not do another one. It has to be dry or you won't get a good burn, but an amateur burning when it's dry has the potential to go bad quickly. Winter burns in good conditions are enjoyable.
