That type of legislation is the ONLY thing that has saved several states from complete hog infiltration. It’s where every state should’ve started before the problem occurred. States that have tried this don’t have hog problems. States that allow hog hunting have hog problems, because that opportunity is there, and there are ppl who will dang sure ensure they will always have them, by illegal transport into new areas. Like it or not, it’s needed in states with very small hog populations. I hate the dang things. The stiffest penalties should be enforced for anyone moving a live hog illegally. He's right you know. Never seen a hog in Kansas.

Im confused, How does prohibiting hog hunting lower the hog population?
If at first you dont succeed, You may not want to try parachuting

Im confused, How does prohibiting hog hunting lower the hog population? Let’s say you have a sounder of hogs come up on you while you are hunting. You shoot at the group and you kill 1 maybe 2 hogs out of that group. Now the rest of the group has been educated. Hogs are very smart animals and learn to avoid hunters very quickly. Option B... You’re in the woods and you have a sounder of hogs come up on you or you have been getting regular pictures of the sounder on your cameras. You get in contact with a local trapper and he comes and sets up a trap. He feeds the trap for a few nights and lets the hogs get used to it. On the 3rd night, the whole sounder is in the trap. Trapper drops the trap and goes in the next morning and shoots the entire sounder. Picks all his stuff up and moves on to the next job. Hog problem eliminated.

What happens if one or 2 of those hogs is outside the trap and now have been educated on traps? If hunting can educate them it seems like missing a hog or 2 in a sounder would educate them as well. And for the record I hate having hogs on our property. We shoot everyone we see hit also run traps.

And for the record I hate having hogs on our property. We shoot everyone we see hit also run traps. That why you don’t drop the trap if there’s a chance at missing any of the hogs. However, 1 or 2 hogs on a property can be removed with shooting them. Sounders or groups are not that easy. The rule states that property owners can still remove hogs by any means necessary. So if you have a lone boar hog on your property and the opportunity presents itself to shoot that hog, you kill him with out prejudice!!

Did anybody even read the info pages on the DCNR site? Hahahaha. Are you kidding? You knew the answer to that before asking. Matt's 100% right about what Kentucky is doing. Missouri has done the same thing and for the moment has knocked back the problem in the SE corner of the state. They're attempting to stop it before it gets out of hand. It appears to have worked, so far I think, on the LBL, too. I don’t know a whole lot about how to best control hogs so I will keep opinions to myself on that. However, if on the TN side of LBL there has been an effective knocking back or elimination of hogs, it would damn well have to be recent. I tried to hunt turkeys there last spring and finally just said to hell with it. Could not get away from the nasty bastards. They were literally everywhere I went. And the turkey hunting was garbage too, as expected after getting an understanding of how bad the hog problem was.

That’s how the hogs got started here where I live. Some guys trapped some hogs in another area and released them on a property they had for hunting so they could have hogs to hunt in the off season. Them dumb phucks didn’t think that through. With in 2 years they are everything they had and ran every deer off that ridge in that marsh. A hungry hog will travel and they ended up here. In Louisiana it supposed to be illegal to transport live wild hogs anywhere but it’s happening. I don’t agree with everything in that article but I do believe hunting and shooting hogs is the worst thing possible for trying to get rid of hogs. Trapping the sounders and large groups is the only way to control them. Thats how they started in North Alabama. Some guys with Hog dogs were tired of driving to other states to hunt them so they turned some loose in Bankhead. On one occasions they had a trailer load coming home and had a flat on I565. In fear of getting caught they opened the gate and thats how they started on the Wheeler refuge, and from there every county north of the river.
Its not the will to win but the will to prepare to win!

Im confused, How does prohibiting hog hunting lower the hog population? It doesn't but the goobermint types want to outlaw hog hunting so they can get the grant $$$. There have been animals hunted to extinction and hogs are no different.

The issue is that people secretly love hunting hogs. They can’t admit it, but they do. I'll openly admit it. I much prefer the challenge of hiking miles in the mountains of north Alabama with all my gear chasing hogs to sitting on my a$$ in freezing weather waiting on a nocturnal deer to show up every blue moon. Hog hunting is much more fun.
