Im sure this has probably been discussed here before as i think this is about the 3rd year in a row we have gone 6-8 weeks with zero rain around planting time. We got our plots in early September (were limited on free time to get it done). Ground was wet at the time of planting so fields came up somewhat, but has not rained since. Has anyone had success with going back and overseeding. If so what type of seed did you use and did you add more fertilizer as well?

I expect Rye Grain would be one of your best options as far as germination goes uncovered.

I’ve had luck with wheat, oats, and rye.

83% of all statistics are made up.

Me too Brad, but I'm pretty far south. If I over seed though, now, I always use wheat. I don't add fertilizer, it hasn't gone anywhere.

According to the literature ideal soil temps for crimson clover germination is between 65-68 degrees but it can germinate in soil temps as low as 42 degrees……Higher temps promotes faster germination……For Alabama that likely gives you a really long window of time….I’ve never monitored soil temps all the way through winter but I’m guessing you could spread crimson just about any time during the fall/winter months……..November is probably the most ideal month truth be told……Clover likes moist and cool

That’s what I’ve always done with some good and some bad, just thing moisture content was not so high when I had bad years.

Piggy backing off the clover, what about overseeding or planting white clovers this last?

Sounds like you have a lot of seed in the ground that didn’t germinate. As dry as it is, I’d put fifty pounds or more to the acre and lightly turn it in if everything you planted is dead and still have hard seed in the ground. Most of the N is gone, but P&K is still working. Spread a hundred pounds of N per acre once it’s growing. As for the excuse it had to be done on a certain date, only cost you more time and money with soso results. We have eight ton of seed and fertilizer sitting at the feed store waiting to be blended, but will be happy to wait until mid November or later based on weather.
