I tried it once and I got sick of smelling the smoke smell in the stand, quick. I can tell you one thing from all my years of bowhunting, you aren’t going to fool a deer’s nose. Best three pieces of advice I can offer is hunt the wind, only wear your hunting boots to and from the stand (nowhere else) and keep your hands off vegetation walking in to your stand.

If you do that, you will smell like a hunter that started a forest fire. Deer don’t like either one of those. Just play the wind and expect anything down wind to bust you.

Winston Full flavor. One on the walk, one every 10 minutes in the stand… seen it with my own two eyes

Play the wind and be as scent free as possible
No scent is the best scent

smoke kills bacteria including odor causing bacteria, thus smoking jerky, etc.
So it both kills odor causing bacteria and covers scent as well. Indians did it to get closer to game. Still hunt the wind as much as possible but the smoke will def help. Deer are used to smelling it in the winter also.

logically the winter is when it’d be (in my mind) the most effective - a time when folks are using their fireplaces for heat
right now, nobody’s burning anything w/the severe drought conditions going on

I can’t remember if there was a drought in Oct 2020 when I was playing around with this to see how the deer would react, but I will be sure and check with your smartass the next time I give it a go

Used to hunt with a fella that chain smoked Pall Malls in the stand. Always killed big bucks, when he hit them. Not the greatest of shots, even recall one where he shot the antler off one side. Deer just stood there like WTF, and he got him on the next shot. Good memories, RIP Mr. Fred.

Yeah I use to do my clothes and it seemed to help. The can in the tree was just another thing I was playing around with. The bee smoker took constantly being stoked to keep a good smoke screen flowing . I probably did it 5-6 times and the deer didn’t seemed bothered by it, just a lot of trouble. The best thing I’ve found is cleanliness. I use to Keep everything as scent free as possible, and shower before each hunt which both of these are a lot of trouble. Nowadays I hunt mostly public so I just use the wind best I can and hope for the best.

i can’t find the video - but Dan Fitzgerald had a blind & he’d hang his socks, underwear, & t-shirts he’d worn inside it 🤣 he said he had game cams where the deer blew like crazy for a few days & then they’d calm down … then he’d go hunting in the stand 😆
