Have any of you had any luck feeding cottonseed to deer in the spring and summer? I see that it's really popular in Texas but I've never seen it done in our area. They make a basket out of wire fencing, fill it up, and the deer come to it. I'm wondering if it may not work out as well here for some reason. Thanks.

I have heard the same, especially in the South GA big agriculture areas, but I have hunted cotton fields my whole life in South AL and have never seen aggressive feeding in cotton fields, especially during deer season after it has been picked.

As for cotton seed gin trash like the original poster is describing, it is super high in protein and loved by cows, but I don't think it would work in most places in AL. It is fed on cattle farms I hunt and I have never seen deer use it. My guess is it works in Texas due to a lack of preferred browse, which Alabama has plenty of with all the clear-cutting and pine thinning. That and Texas deer are more accustomed to getting significant portions of their diet from feeders.

I wondered if that was why it wasn't popular around here. There's definitely more available for the deer to eat around here than in Texas.

I’ve always heard you don’t want to feed a lot of cotton seed/gin trash to your bulls, stunts their sex drive/makes them shoot blanks. Just something I’ve always been told, I could be wrong. I get most advice from old folks who are known to bs

They hammer the plants as they are coming out of the ground. Rode on a cotton picker a few years back with a friend and the first 6-8 rows from the edge had been mowed by the deer.

The ranch I hunt in Texas feeds it year round. It’s called fortified Cotten seed I think. You can feed it in the south but it needs to stay dry. Out there there is not any humidity and stays dry most of the time. I started feeding a Cotten seed meal in my troughs this year but as soon as it got wet it was nasty and the deer wouldn’t touch it. I’m gonna try to start getting the fortified cotton seed next year and try feeding it. Antler king started making a feed called cotton candy that has it in it and some other stuff. It looked like a good mix that I would like to try as well

A lot of ag crops are sprayed with defoliates before harvest thst could leave a smelly residue for a while, which could keep deer from wanting to eat it. Some farmers on here could possibly comment on here whether or not that affects deer. Deer do like the green peanut leaves and soybean plant and seed. I have read about soybeans dried and mixed with corn can be a good addition to a feeder. Soybeans are better feed for deer than corn due to higher protein content, corn is high in cabs and low in protein.

Yea the fresh tender growth early in summer would make sense.
