School me on this shot I’ve always been a behind the shoulder guy but deer usually run 50-100 yards, I’ve shot does in the neck with good results, I hunt in fairly hilly steep terrain and would rather them not run if possible, if someone could post some pics of where to aim that would be great

the danger with high shoulder shots is shooting too high. Shot too high a deer will usually immediately fall, only to jump up and run off. Usually not recovered.

If broadside and possible , I always take the high percentage shot, most forgiving shot, a line straight up the back of the front leg , 1/3 the way up the body. That's a kill zone the size of a basket ball. I don't care if they run 50 yards , they're dead.

Shoot with a rifle same as with a bow. Think of the chest , lungs and heart as a basketball , what do I do to make the bullet or arrow go through the center of the ball.

Where the point of the shoulder blade is will be the place to shoot
It breaks both shoulders and damages the spine and the deer is always DOTS

High shoulder is one of the most risky shots to take. It’s very effective if you hit the CNS in the spine between the shoulder blades. However, if you miss 2” forward or 1” high you’ll give him a good case of temporarily paralysis, you’ll call your buddies in celebration, and he’ll jump up and run off never to be found. Then you’ll call CNC to bring his dog out there and waste everyone’s time. Take the double lung. Even if they run you’ve got a dead deer. The difference in a 16” pie plate kill zone and a baseball is what you’re looking at. There’s plenty of shooters who can hit a baseball at 100+ yards. Then there’s a whole lot who think they can but actually can’t while hunting.

This is exactly what happened to me last year.......phone calls included, even down to calling CNC and wasted his and my time.

Center mass on the shoulder...... the heck with that small amount of meat. You break them shoulders and get all that goody between them and he's done.

When people shoot for DE and end up hitting 234. That’s where it all goes bad. There’s an area where the spine actually drops below the top of the back in the neck/shoulder region. All the vitals are below that. So if you nick the spine on the top side or miss it by an inch all it does is deliver temporary paralysis.

This the money spot for high shoulder shot. Blue is spinal cord, clip it and the running gear doesn’t work.

The problem is a lot of folks zero at 200 yards (or just can’t shoot), which puts it about 2” high at 100 yards. So if the deer is around 100 yards, you’ll impact higher than point of aim and just get a back whack.

With all due respect, the problem is folks aren't aiming at that little pink square between the two red areas and the two ribs. You aim there , you have much more than 2" any direction for error.

D is where I’d love to shoot if I was worried about running off a bluff and I was perfect.

N is where I normally shoot, adjusting for deviation from broadside

N and if I can see the deer it gets a second shot. It's cheap insurance. I learned my lesson the hard way after watching a 'dead' deer jump up and run away.

If you are not wanting to shoot to far, let's say 100 yards or less, stepping up to a larger grain bullet could do more damage resulting in more drt's. If you shoot off a rest or a support at that distance there should not be a problem dropping a deer in MNOP areas of a target.
I bet the 350 Legend with a 250 grain JHP soft point would do the job for 100yds or less.

I bought a 4” steel target and set it up at my 200yd target. I’m able to hit it fairly consistently with a good rest. It was very humbling at first for me and my buddies. You would think a 4” target at 200yds is an easy shot but it can have its challenges.

If hit further back, he might run a few yards, but he will still be dead. I have a whole lot of room for error in any direction, and I don't believe the dead zone below the backbone exists with this load. The 30 caliber bullet at 2920 has enough energy that most of it is going all the way through the deer, but that bullet fragments enough that something will always get in the vitals. At least, it always has so far.

If I decide to shoot one with the ML I will aim for O.

The spot between the triangle that MFN makes is my preferred spot, assuming true broadside.

I will aim either slightly forward or back depending on quartered to or away. I guess the best way to describe it is I aim for the exit I want more than the entrance.
