Since this is about the only place anymore that doesn’t try and censor everything I’ll speak my peace here……Its not doing us any good for the folks who run the facebook tracking pages to misinform the public that “leg shots are survivable in most situations and for us not to talk about them”….That is simply not true and only making everyone look like we’re doing something wrong when we’re not….The truth is that the vast majority of leg shots….probably 99% of them…..die within less than a week due to being brought down by coyotes….The ones that do make it are rare exceptions out of the 100’s and 100’s that get shot in the leg annually. I don’t understand why in the world some folks who are seen as being in leadership roles are misinforming the public otherwise and making it sound like we’re finishing off non-fatally hit deer. That’s simply not true.
Rant over…….back to your regularly scheduled programming.

I agree, thought it was crazy that got wrote into that post. It was because of Wendel (game warden)on my track in Limestone county that it was posted

I’m not trying to hack on him by saying this because he’s a good dude but he just doesn’t track enough to really know what he’s talking about.

One of the problems we have is that these tracking pages……Nose to the Ground as well……are run by some of the least experienced trackers amongst us…..Guys who like being in that position of having some power and influence and like being the ones who are seen as the go between for trackers and the DCNR but have very little real world experience…..We need to be represented by folks who actually go out and track deer and bay deer and know what they’re talking about when they speak instead of having folks who are just gonna spread their own misinformed opinions…..If this is what they’re going to do then it would be just as well for us all to boycott them and take away any influence they may have. Truth be told there’s likely a bit of jealousy involved in these opinions coming from folks who don’t have a dog that will bay up a deer that needs finishing……That’s where a good bit of that opinion gets formed. “My dogs wont do it so I don’t like that other folks are……so I’m gonna subtly hate on it”…..

Oh the irony… …..After us talking about leg shots a tracker on the GA blood tracking page posted up a pic this morning of a 3 legged buck that is still alive a couple weeks later……This kinda proves my point though of something I’ve said before…… Hunters commonly send us pics of deer we track that show back up on camera. If any of these 3 legged deer actually made it then you can damn sure bet someone is going to post his picture up saying…..”Hey look everybody!!...A three-legged deer!!”……He might as well be an albino….You’re gonna hear about it Therefore, it makes it pretty easy to calculate the approximate survival rate of these deer. We know that leg shots are one of the most common calls during gun season for all trackers….. With 300,000 deer being shot annually in Alabama the total number of leg shots occurring is going to be pretty high……likely being more than a thousand or even several thousand statewide……It gets brutal with folks shooting at them during the rut….Out of all those hundreds or thousands here’s ONE picture someone has and its not even in Alabama……This is where someone can take that ONE rare picture that someone gets on occasion and distort the reality of it by saying “Hey look see they can make it!”…..or you can step back and look at the bigger picture and have some perspective on what’s actually occurring……It took thousands of leg shots to produce that ONE survivor…..This is really a non-issue but folks always gonna find something to bitch about and its an easy “cause” for those folks to cling to.

Have you noticed more people shooting subsonic CNC? I've tracked 3 deer shot with the same 8.6 shooting subsonic 450gr bullets. One was a miss, one showed back up on camera and couldn't tell where it was hit and the one today got up and smoked us about 1,400 yards into the track. All of them have been shot from 200ish yards. Pretty positive the bullets aren't penetrating much if any at all. I've tracked a few 300 blackouts shooting subsonics but close shots no pass throughs and no blood but found them Rule of thumb for hunting with subsonics has always been around 100 yards, preferably less. Closer the better. A 285 gr 8.6 shows 940 to 1020 at the muzzle. A 450 gr would be an even worse/slower hunting choice for shooting anything period, IMO, and especially over 100.. Sounds to me like someone got a cool new target rifle and is not using it in a proper application.
