This the money spot for high shoulder shot. Blue is spinal cord, clip it and the running gear doesn’t work. The problem is a lot of folks zero at 200 yards (or just can’t shoot), which puts it about 2” high at 100 yards. So if the deer is around 100 yards, you’ll impact higher than point of aim and just get a back whack.
You're only as good as your worst shot-

With all due respect, the problem is folks aren't aiming at that little pink square between the two red areas and the two ribs. You aim there , you have much more than 2" any direction for error.

High shoulder is one of the most risky shots to take. It’s very effective if you hit the CNS in the spine between the shoulder blades. However, if you miss 2” forward or 1” high you’ll give him a good case of temporarily paralysis, you’ll call your buddies in celebration, and he’ll jump up and run off never to be found. Then you’ll call CNC to bring his dog out there and waste everyone’s time. Take the double lung. Even if they run you’ve got a dead deer. The difference in a 16” pie plate kill zone and a baseball is what you’re looking at. There’s plenty of shooters who can hit a baseball at 100+ yards. Then there’s a whole lot who think they can but actually can’t while hunting. I bought a 4” steel target and set it up at my 200yd target. I’m able to hit it fairly consistently with a good rest. It was very humbling at first for me and my buddies. You would think a 4” target at 200yds is an easy shot but it can have its challenges.

I aim for the spot between the F and N with the 308. With a 150g NBT, he will be dead and on the ground a second after I touch the trigger if I hit anywhere close to where I am aiming. If hit further back, he might run a few yards, but he will still be dead. I have a whole lot of room for error in any direction, and I don't believe the dead zone below the backbone exists with this load. The 30 caliber bullet at 2920 has enough energy that most of it is going all the way through the deer, but that bullet fragments enough that something will always get in the vitals. At least, it always has so far. If I decide to shoot one with the ML I will aim for O.

The spot between the triangle that MFN makes is my preferred spot, assuming true broadside.
I will aim either slightly forward or back depending on quartered to or away. I guess the best way to describe it is I aim for the exit I want more than the entrance.
Best advice on this thread.
