My Dad (aka “Pop”) got revenge on a STUD 8 point yesterday afternoon!!! Here’s the story… We normally have pretty extensive history with mature bucks at our farm, but I can’t place this one from years past…This buck showed up on camera in August in the far background at a salt lick. I could tell the buck had a big frame, but that’s about it. About a month later, I got a picture of him at a corn pile near the salt lick. This picture verified my original thoughts that he’d be our #1 target that I’d had on camera up to that point!! The buck was in a bachelor group of 5 bucks and they began showing up more often at the corn pile in this food plot. With our bow season opening on October 1st in Zone D, Pop began hunting this buck every chance that the conditions were favorable. October 16th brought cooler temperatures and a Northly wind and it put the buck on his feet in the daylight that afternoon. Pop was in the shooting house and misjudged the yardage, causing him to shoot right under the buck with his crossbow…We knew that getting a second chance at him would be a tough task!!! The bachelor group continued to visit the food plot and corn pile, but also began crossing a nearby U.S. highway fairly often...We slowly began to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together and figured out that the bachelor group was bedding near our neighbors’ house and the neighbors were putting lots of added pressure on the deer: shooting pistols in the yard, their 6-8 dogs roaming and barking constantly, etc. Pop has continued to hunt this spot every chance that the wind was right since our gun season opened almost two weeks ago…The stars aligned yesterday afternoon and the cold front put the buck on his feet just before dark. Pop made it count and the buck made it about 35 yards after the blast from his .25-06!!! We rough scored the buck at 134 6/8” and he weighed 186 lbs.
