How many deer have you lost bow hunting? Why do people say that a quartering away shot is a better shot to take than a broad side shot?
Shot a doe this morning quartering away from me and caught the opposing shoulder. She ran over 100yds with my arrow still in her, I trailed her about 300 yds but the blood trail dried up at the end where she crossed a dirt road so really peeved at this point. I've played the scene over in my head a dozen times and the shot looked good, it just caught that opposing shoulder.

Highly possible that your arrow may have deflected, failed to penetrate the chest cavity, run along under the hide and hung up in the onside shoulder. I’ve had that happen with a mechanical before. A quartering shot that hits the opposite shoulder is a dead deer.

That’s possible but it ran off dragging its right front leg which was the opposing shoulder. The arrow looks to have at least penetrated 8-9”.

I checked again but it’s the same thing as before, she crossed a dirt road leaving no blood trail onto a neighbors property and just like the last year and a half he won’t return calls or respond to voicemails. Unfortunately it’s time to get ready for work, in the 9 yrs that I’ve been bow hunting this is the second deer that I’ve lost, just irks me to no end.

As you know, with a bow or crossbow there is that trajectory issue. Point of impact and the spot you shooting at can be off. A little too high or low and you have a runner. Sometimes you just have to try again or get out the old rifle if you want a drt.

If she ran over 300 yards, it isn't hitting the shoulder that is the problem. The problem is what you didnt hit before you hit the shoulder. It sucks but that is bowhunting and it happens to us all occasionally.

I once shot a deer with a 308 that was slightly quartered towards me, bullet entered just behind the right shoulder deflected off a rib and exited out the opposite hind quarter and stuck into the tree behind the deer. If a bullet can do what that then an arrow could as well, or the shot may not have been as spot on as it looked. It sucks and I don’t like losing any animal but lesson learned; I’ll stick with a broad side shot.

I guess I'm too old school, I will wait for a broadside shot 99% of the time especially now that my old butt is shooting lower poundage bow. Doubled lunged a good Fl. buck last week that ran 50-60 yds. with a bllod trail Ray Charles could have followed. I like all of us have had my share of lost deer due to a not perfect shot

I like a slightly quartering away shot, but I still want to hit lungs on the near side.

depending on how much it is quartering you prob shot too far forward only getting one lung. if it's quartered bad you need to aim further back to catch both lungs. aim at offside shoulder.
