I’m thankful we Americans have the right to work for who we want to and who wants us to work for them the most.
You stated the way things are very well without even meaning to......or maybe you did. These guys are basically "employees" now, not just students. That being said, I don't even see the point in supplying scholarships for those who accept the big payouts. If they accept the NIL money, make them pay tuition. Those guys are not there for the education anyhow. Give the scholarship money to the "scholars".
They’ve always been employees. They just weren’t getting paid what they were worth is all. Especially football players at power 5 schools. The schools have made millions and millions off of them for a long time. And a lot of people here think they are evil for wanting to make the most money they can with their talents. Most on here want to keep paying them an education while the universities keep more of the profits. I really don’t understand the way some people think.
I don't think they are evil for wanting to make money. I will say however that all they were "paying" them was an education isn't entirely accurate. Yes, the schools are making bank off the players and the games but they are also providing them with the venue and means to showcase their talents to the next level organization. Without that coaching, training, and exposure on Saturdays, where would a lot of them be? I would say that is worth a lot in itself. It's kind of like the contestants on American Idol. They aren't getting paid millions to perform on those shows, they are being provided the opportunity and exposure to possibly get to that next level. Another thing I would like to add is, if they are going to be paid like employees, then they should be required to sign a contract for a certain period of time, just like NFL players. After a set amount of time hey could enter "free agency", so to speak, and hit the transfer portal.

Now there is an idea, and good one at that. And it came from Driveby of all people. I'm shook.
Ok. Say there are 10 players on each team with “big payouts”. I don’t think there is but let’s just say there is. Do you think the university is losing the money it eats on the education? Heck no. They will make it back 10 fold on what the program makes. Also, if the education is valued by the university at say $100k over 4 years, do you think that is what it costs the university? Absolutely not.
Also, if the university wanted to give 10 “scholars” scholarships, they don’t have to delete 10 athletic scholarships to do it. That’s chump change to the university. The university is in the money making business. College tuition is the second biggest racket in the US next to insurance. Scholars don’t always bring more profit to the school, sometimes I’m sure they bring some but on average they do not. But those 10 employees on the team definitely do. Pay the employees what they are worth and keep them happy and let them make you money… sounds like a great business plan.

I wasn’t necessarily talking about you thinking they were evil. I agree somewhat with what you said about the college providing a platform to get to the NFL, but if college wasn’t there to provide it then the NFL would.
Now I agree 100% that there should be contracts Driveby. This would protect both sides. It would keep the school from making them leave as well. Which happens a lot we just don’t hear about it.
Drive by the reason I’m so pro athlete with the way college football is is because I’ve seen the worst of it. I’ve seen players lied to, thrown away, promises broken, and everything in between. To these schools it’s all about money and how much they can make off of fans, boosters, and athletes. And unfortunately for a long time, the athletes were sucking hind tit and they were the ones making the college all the money.

Pwyse, I kind of figured you for being a coach or former coach or at least something to do with an athletics program on some level because of your passion for the subject. I may be wrong about that though and there's nothing at all wrong with it if you are. My son is a Biology major now and wants to teach high school or junior college.........and coach.

Lectrode don't believe we're talking about the same pick, there was a few thrown by Milroe 😏 Pick 6 was his 2nd Interception when Milroe failed to tackle the feller 🤔
Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many!

I coached high school ball in Mobile for a few years. I loved it. I love kids. I hate parents 🤣
That’s awesome about your son. I hope he gets to do what he wants to do. The world definitely needs good coaches for young men the way the American family is right now. Hats off to him!

They are going to follow the money. It's that simple. Until they are contractually obligated to stay at a school it will not stop.

Well of course. It makes sense to make the most money you can when you work for someone. Who wouldn’t?
If that is truly the case, Williams will be jumping in the portal and heading to TX. Whole lot more $$ out there for him and a QB in Manning, that can actually reliably get him the ball and help him pump his stats. I sure hope youre wrong because he’s by far the best player on Bamas roster.
