Thanks for posting. Poor dogs just don't understand stopping.
Rule one of urban hunting is to be proficient enough to anchor
the Deer with a crushing shot. Archery may be a bit different.

Paw paw was sitting with his grandson this morning when their target buck walked out around 8:00……Junior hit a little low on a quartering to angle…..They said his chest hit the ground and then he took off…..They spent the next 3 hrs tracking him roughly 600 yards before running out of blood…..

We got on the track around 3:00 this afternoon and jumped him about 300 yards past where they lost blood……He ran about 250 yards and then laid down on his belly in a briar thicket and let the dogs run past him…..About the time I was catching up to them they had turned around and started circling the briar patch….He never even tried to get up after that…..I think he was pretty much done for at that point…….

[Linked Image]

Here's the entry……….

[Linked Image]

…….passing through the leg and into body cavity………

[Linked Image]

……and out the bottom of his belly……

[Linked Image]

Here’s the briar thicket he was trying to hide in…..I should have took a pic before I dragged him out….He was belly down in that little depression where you see the blood spot….You would have walked right by him had it not been for the dogs pointing him……All I could see was his hind end sticking out….Dang things act like rabbits sometimes…….

Nice job CNC, been slow for me. Ran a high fence deer yesterday till we all decided he was fine. Went on a track in Woodville that had short white hair with alittle fat. I knew it was brisket but tried it anyway. Dogs got him up and moving well over a mile into the track. I had a 130 plus inch buck come 30 yards and stop broadside next to me. He was looking back towards the dogs and never noticed me. Pretty cool experience but wasn't the deer we were tracking

I’ve been thinking more about it and I think that last one did a “J” hook on us at the very end……I was trying to condense the story down and not get too long winded with it but when I caught up to the dogs we had actually all passed the buck bedded down…..About the time the dogs looped back and came by me, the buck jumped out of a briar thicket about 15-20 yards behind me……He ran about 30-40 yards and dove back down into a bedded position in another briar thicket and that’s the one the dogs start circling and pointing him……

He did some kind of sneaky move there to try and lose the dogs though…..The interesting thing to me is that these things they do like this have to be natural instinct type behaviors……They don’t really get a bunch of opportunities to learn them….

I tracked a big buck in Tanner one night that would run up the middle of a creek and bed down in the edge of the water. Everytime the dogs caught his wind he'd have a head start and do it over again. Finally got him after a couple hours of that crap. I've had them do that to me since then but not like he did it. I have noticed they usually do it going down stream and not up stream which makes sense far as throwing the dogs off more

It makes me think about how many times as hunters we’ve probably walked right by big bucks and them lay there by a log with their head down and us not even know they were there…….I walked right by that one within 5-10 yards of him…..He could have got me if he had wanted to……I was looking up ahead toward where the dogs were at and he was to my right as I went by him…..

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow!!........or the neighbors non-tracking yard dog!!....... grin

Buck was shot today around 11:30 on a pretty hard quartering to angle from over 300 yards away with a 7 mag…….Hunter got down and tracked pretty good blood for about 300 yards before losing it in the pouring down rain……Went back after the rain with the neighbors yard dog but didn’t have any luck…..We got there around 2:30 just after another rain shower passed through and were able to methodically pick our way another 250 yards or so to where the deer was bedded down on a ridge top……He jumped and ran about 100 yards to the foot of the hill before he stopped and turned on the dogs and that’s where it ended….

[Linked Image]

Somehow or another he got an entrance and an exit wound on the same side of the deer………

Given the warm temps and deer was still alive is that deer still ok to consume? Also isn't a wounded deer going to be pumped full of adrenaline and therefore making meat not so tasty as w clean kill would be?

I’d like to have seen that last one field dressed to see what kind of internal damage was done……The wound doesn’t look like a whole lot from the outside but the deer was pretty disabled….He had four good legs but just couldn’t run……While I was getting into position to finish him off he laid back down on the ground right in front of the dogs…..I’m guessing he might have had some broken ribs on top of the bullet damaging internal organs…..He definitely was not doing well.

Here's Otis’s yankee brother "Sarg" from Michigan…….I’m always amazed at how he gets him to pose like that…..Heck, I have to leash Otis to a tree to keep him from eating the deer’s butthole out…… grin

Btw……that’s what tags look like y’all……I wonder if ours will be green? laugh
