Like many things, it seems they need to be or become accustomed to the new thing as food. From talking to folks who live in places where pumpkins are regularly grown, their local deer will eat them. I’ve been taking our front porch pumpkins to the camp for the last three years and the deer don’t touch them. The hogs don’t touch them. Crows peck at them a little. I think it’s the same with brassicas. People complain that their deer don’t really eat them much the first year if they haven’t already had them as a regular plot seed.

Wife dumped about 3 here at the house last year and they sat for months and months with nothing touching them. Deer acted scared of'em (they definitely avoided) so i took a shovel and tossed 'em. But they won't eat out or around any feeder here either, so who knows 😏

I had a lease in KY several years ago with probably 10 acres of pumpkins and the deer would absolutely eat them

I set some out at lease here last year. Wife said put them out to see from halloween. I put them at roads on my lease - they rotted. I set some more out this year at all turns/roads on my lease. May freak a poacher out 😀

Bubba Roundtree on YouTube put some out around his feeders after Halloween...the deer avoided them like the plague.

The only three things I’ve found a white tail deer won’t eat at some point or another are Fake and metal plants, Rosemary, and Basil.
If you bust the pumpkins open and they finally discover it, they will eat them.

I’ve put them in field behind the house every year for years. Never seen em touched. But deer can be odd. Got a place a few miles away not quite as deer dense as here at the house. They would not eat corn out of one of those Moultrie feeders that straps to the tree. Corn had to be on the ground. I shot an 8 point with his head in the feeder here.

I also recall when biological first came out some guys had trouble with getting deer to eat it while others said they mowed it down. It may be a regional thing or lack of knowing
Like the first time I planted sunflowers and a few other crops.
They ignored it until they tried it and then it was on. Sometimes takes a few years and other times a few weeks.
