I just got back from the camp and I was surprised at the number of smaller fawns we had this year. Just about every doe I saw had a smaller fawn it or small twin fawns with them. Also seen a couple fawns in plots by themselves. Guess they were orphaned. This would probably explain why we saw absolutely zero rutting activities at the end of January last season. I can’t ever remember seeing fawns this small this time of year on our place. The good thing is we had 1 heck of a fawn crop. Of all the does we had seen only 1 was by itself and I killed her. She was dry and weighed 100lbs. Well 99.5lbs to be exact. Is anyone else seeing younger than normal fawns this season?

Before the cell cam we had on a certain place at the camp crapped the bed in late October we were still getting pictures of spotted fawns. And plenty of them. We tend to have a couple late born fawns every year but never this many that I can remember. Like I said, we had a heck of a good crop this year. It’s just cutting into our doe shooting because we don’t shoot does with fawns on their side. Just can’t do it.

At my club in Marengo County I have never seen so many small fawns this time of the year. We have lots of them, but they are really small. No spots Same thing we have in South Monroe County.

I’ve orphaned an untold amount of fawns and they’re all fine. 5 minutes after you put her in the truck bed they forget about it. We had a field on one place we used to have, where we used shoot the does really hard. We named the field "The Orphanage". By mid december it would have 8-12 fawns feeding in it every afternoon with not a momma in sight.

Yeah I’m calling a couple fields here orphan city this year. 😂 Both fields are full of orphans and racks every afternoon.

Oh I have no doubt they are fine. I have turned into a softie in my dotage. I can shoot a buck pretty much any time I want freezer meat. I will let the kids and friends who want a doe take care of it. I have pretty much zero interest in shooting anything that won’t go on my wall these days. Too much hassle after the shot It has become work no doubt.
