I didn't pay ss for over 20 years as a railroad employee. Yes, we had our own retirement system. We paid into what is called tier 1 and tier 2. 1 is same as ss but is paid out more. 2 is for your spouse, So they could get a retirement also. I was told that after 10 years the funds put into ss would roll over to railroad retirement.
if i hadnt taken up hunting i might have became a juvenile delinquent or worst taken up GOLF

Senator John Kennedy put out a video explaining to the citizens of Louisiana what the bill would do. You can find it on YouTube.

I can tell you that most of your local law enforcement / firefighters do not pay into social security. I think it was a RSA thing, which most local agencies have gone to. Not sure if that also effects teachers, or if they pay into it. Maybe I'm mis-reading your post. Maybe by "most of your local law enforcement / firefighters" you meant a specific location I'm not aware of. But I can show you a LOT of old pay stubs where I gave a large amount of money for SS. For decades I said I'd gladly give up all the money I'd paid in if they'd stop taking money going forward. I said that until I retired from the Fire Service and I meant it too. From where I'm standing, you are incorrect. Prove me wrong, I'm all ears. Are you still employed? Under RSA?

I understand now , good explanation . So those effected did pay into SS. My wife is "Jenny Smith" but she worked in private sector first , then for the State , and as a Nurse for both. Wonder if she's gonna see a little more on her SS check?

I've never even looked into my SS benefits. Always assumed it wouldn't be there for me when eligible. However, had I got to eligibility and been told because I paid into both SS and my Pension, that SS was gonna penalize me for it. Well, lets just say I might have been tempted to end up in prison and have groupies sending me love letters. That's not right and frankly whomever came up with that bullshit needs executed.

As far as I’m concerned, anyone who has paid into it should get their Social Security and anyone who’s hasn’t shouldn’t

I worry about changes that will make my SSI benefits lower because of a pension I will get at retirement in 5 years or when they get tired of my old ways.

I worry about changes that will make my SSI benefits lower because of a pension I will get at retirement in 5 years or when they get tired of my old ways. Everyone should worry about their social security payments in the future. The system will be out of money to pay full payments in 2035 and this doesn't take into consideration the new amounts they are paying for what congress just passed. Prepare for cuts in amount, not being able to get payments until you are older and no payments to folks who have actually saved their money.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1B6xASCxLE/?I DON'T THINK PISSED REALLY COVERS IT ! ! ! Alan Simpson, the Senator from Wyoming calls senior citizens the Greediest Generation as he compared "Social Security " to a Milk Cow with 310 million teats. Here's a response in a letter from PATTY MYERS in Montana ... I think she is a little ticked off! She also tells it like it is! "Hey Alan, let's get a few things straight!!! 1. As a career politician, you have been on the public dole (tit) for FIFTY YEARS. 2. I have been paying Social Security taxes for 48 YEARS (since I was 15 years old. I am now 63). 3. My Social Security payments, and those of millions of other Americans, were safely tucked away in an interest bearing account for decades until you political pukes decided to raid the account and give OUR money to a bunch of zero losers in return for votes, thus bankrupting the system and turning Social Security into a Ponzi scheme that would make Bernie Madoff proud. 4. Recently, just like Lucy & Charlie Brown, you and "your ilk" pulled the proverbial football away from millions of American seniors nearing retirement and moved the goalposts for full retirement from age 65 to age, 67. NOW, you and your "shill commission" are proposing to move the goalposts YET AGAIN. 5. I, and millions of other Americans, have been paying into Medicare from Day One, and now "you morons" propose to change the rules of the game. Why? Well, Captain Bxxxxxxit, I have a few questions for YOU: 1. How much money have you earned from the American taxpayers during your pathetic 50-year political career? 2. At what age did you retire from your pathetic political career, and how much are you receiving in annual retirement benefits from the American taxpayers? 3. How much do you pay for YOUR government provided health insurance? 4. It is you, Captain Bxxxxxxt, and your political co-conspirators called Congress who are the "greedy" ones. People who paid into it are entitled to the benefit. Whomever wrote it is a dumbarse. While I agree with their sentiment, they are also entitled to the benefit. Welfare is NOT an entitlement. Nobody is entitled to it. It's given as a handout. Unfortunately a whole lotta people are actually convinced they are entitled to it because they're sorry as hell. I'd like to know how many people are drawing SS benefits that haven't paid into it. With few exceptions they need to come off that tit. How much of the foreign aid we threw away could have been used to return SS to solvency? Hopefully Trump will address that, but doubtful.

Welfare is an entitlement according to the Supreme court. Unfortunately. I remember asking my mother about this when I was still young. She said they tried to make folks work for welfare but then it happened..."Yes, the Supreme Court has ruled that welfare benefits are entitlements and are protected by the Constitution":
" Goldberg v. Kelly In this landmark 1970 case, the Supreme Court ruled that welfare benefits are property and that recipients are entitled to a pre-termination evidentiary hearing before their benefits are discontinued. Justice Brennan stated that welfare benefits are a statutory entitlement for those who qualify to receive them. "
"Other federal entitlements include unemployment benefits, housing subsidies, and SNAP"
I absolutely hate welfare and what it has done.

My Fire Department opted out of paying into SS years ago, so we could fund our own pensions by having 11% taken out every payday, upon retirement, we received our pensions. What they didn’t consider was most firemen worked side jobs the entire time and paid into SS. What they penalized us for. Let’s say you paid into SS and should have earned $2500 a month, but because your main employer opted out of SS, they reduced your entitlement by up to 2/3. This is my current situation. I started work at FD at age 30 and had already paid all my quarters into SS to earn $2800, but they cut me to $800. I also owned my own law care business while working as a firefighter and paid my share plus the employers share into SS, and was told SORRY but that’s the WEP (windfall elimination program) rules. These are the rules that basically got reversed. If you didn’t pay SS, you wouldn’t get anything.

That’s strong. If you were paying in less than 30 years (like 10 years/40 quarter minimum), you had to be making even more income—substantially more actually. Again, that’s strong as moonshine for income if that’s what you were doing. I don’t see any other way you could earn $2800 per month in social security payments with the formulas social security is built on.
