Has anyone ever used the service DeerAge.com offers? They claim it is more accurate than aging by wear but I don't know anything about it. Curious if any of the resident experts know anything about it?

Don’t know about that particular company, but the way they do it is the only accurate way to truly age a whitetail.

It’s WAY better than using tooth wear and replacement. It’s not reliable after all the permanent teeth are in. One thing I’ve learned about tooth wear is it varies by individual and over about 3 years of age it’s a guess at best. Some follow the rules, some don’t, and some are off so bad it leaves you scratching your head. Even on known aged deer all raised on the same diet tooth wear varies tremendously.

I wonder when that’ll be recognized and changed

I’ve read where the enamel layers are sometimes wrong.

I keep waiting on it. Biologists who only know text books still hold to it. Biologists who actually manage properties and have familiarity with individual deer, their known ages, and keep good data will tell you it’s not very accurate.

We have used it and it seems to be spot on. Every once in awhile they will get a “B” grade tooth and you will get an estimate (ex 4-5 year old). But 90% of the teeth we have sent in came back pretty much what we thought with pic history and body assessment.

2 years ago we had a really good buck on our place. We thought he was around 140”. I had him on camera the year before and didn’t hunt him because he looked like a 3 year old to me. Everyone else thought this was a different deer because he had put on so much more mass. A guy kills him and his tooth came back as 4.5. I’m a believer of it for sure.

This. Take 10 Eighty year old humans. You can’t age them by teeth alone IMO.
