I've got a 700 long action sitting in the safe that needs to be turned into something. I've got a 270 and a 3006 and a7mm rem mag everything else I own are short actions. If you were going to build a rifle which caliber would you want? I've always wanted a 35 whelen and that probably makes the most sense for actual use in Alabama but the '06 variants are interesting to me mainly the 338-06 or 6.5-06

I love my 35 Whelen but if I was to go the custom route I would with something in .284 caliber. But that 338-06 in intriguing to me.

I like the sound of the 6.5-06 . I'm jonesin' for a 25-06 myself.

The prc if you wanted to shoot long range, the wm if you wanted to hunt and ammo was pretty much around anywhere.

What do you want to do with the rifle? Long range or woods hunting? Deer hunting or other critters possible?
Assuming this rifle has a standard bolt face. Unless you load your own ammo, go with either a 25 06 or 35 Whelen. If you roll your own, I would build a 338 06.

35 Whelen, 338-06, or 25-06
I did a 6.5 - 06 A-square with my last long action per Harvey King's recommendation and I like it pretty good

Is it a standard or magnum bolt face? If standard, I would choose the 25 caliber and the 25-06 cartridge. If magnum, I would choose the 6.5 caliber and the 6.5 PRC cartridge.
However, if you’ve always wanted a 35 Whelen, then definitely go that route.
On second thought, only do the Whelen cartridge. Most all other cartridges can be had in factory offerings for much cheaper than a custom job.

I’ve been loading and shooting the Whelen for 23 years now. It’s an awesome cartridge. I’ve shot a lot of deer with it and it has never failed to impress, even out to 300 yards. However, I’m soon to rebarrel to a 25-06 as I’m past my enjoying recoil days. I have a 243 and a lightweight 30-06. The Whelen has stayed home now for 3 years.

Or, sell the action to fund a Tikka build. You could buy a t3x lite stainless in 22-250 with a 1:8 twist. You could either shoot it as a 22-250 or have the barrel setback and rechambered to 22 Creedmoor. Or buy one in a 243 with a 1:8 twist and either shoot it as is or turn it into a 6 Creedmoor.

Or 22-250AI
I really like my Browning A-Bolt 35 Whelen also.

284 Winchester if standard bolt face.
You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

284 Winchester if standard bolt face. Ahhh, good suggestion. One of the most accurate rifles I've ever seen was a custom .284, built on a Sako action.
