Bolt face isn’t gonna be the right size for any of the PRC’s.

The thought of a .284Win build on a Remmy action puts a grin on my face. LOVE it.

As far as .338-06 or 35Townsend. . .when faced with the exact same dilemma trying to decide for one of my builds, Harvey King said the .338 barrel was in stock and the .35cal one I wanted was a 6 month wait. Guess what I went with? You got it, the 338-06 purely because I didn’t have the patience to delay the build that much longer.

Whats the difference between the 284 and 280? Know a guy with 280AI and it’s a tack driver

280 is based on a 30-06 case . 284 is on a 7.5X 55 case ( I think). It's a 7mm , .284 bullet. It's falls between a 7mm-08 and 280 . Very unique round .

The 284 win and 284 Shehane has won more 600 and 1k F class matches than just about any other cartridge but if I was building a custom rifle I'd build a 7/6.5 PRCW but it really doesn't matter what you build or what caliber it's in you aren't going to outshoot any factory chambering or factory rifle at hunting distances anyway but like Townsend Whelen said "Only accurate rifles are interesting".

338-06 is the only good answer

You got to many other comparable cartridges to everything.
338-06 trumps them all .it's a lot more killing power than your 7mag and burns 5-10 grs less powder.id bet recoil will be less.idk

Non of my 338-06 have kicked much but the only 7mag I've fired was pretty stout I thought.idk
Probably weight of rifle and recoil pad idk.but 338-06 are pretty mild in recoil considering the power

Puts you in the 300wsm 300 winmag range of energy with roughly 54-59 grs powder and old school medium burn powders.imr 4064,h4895,rl15. You can hot rod it up with newer powders like cfe223
and stabil 6.5 .

with a 338-06 you got to reload or pay well over $100 for a box of shells .

dont really know why im talking bout this i really dont care .

im not saying you wrong or even implying that . what I'm try to get at is the ever day hunter aint going to take a odd ball caliber ( 338-06 or 284 win) and try to turn them into a caliber they can just go buy and ammo easy to get .

338-06 and the 35 whelen factor ammo at much difference in what they can do . i dont know but i figure if you reloaded both there still aint that much difference to the critter you kill with it ,

i do admit i wish i had started reloading in my younger years but a guy can only have so many hobbies.

Oh trust me I understand.hobbies become work once you get to involved sometimes.ive actually had to down size my handloading cartridges and sell off rifles.i couldn't keep up them all up it didn't make sense anymore...

You got to realize a lot of us are handloading junkies who shoot all the time.so on this hunting forum we aren't always most helpful
Alot of us are closer to competition shooters than hunters.to each there own

But yes we can all agree 35 Whelen is perfect Alabama deer hammer no doubt it's easy and works damn near just as close as 338-06 ..
Us bolt action gun nuts over think everything.to much time reading numbers and shooting groups

But the deer will all get killed with any of these cartridges.

Frankie we are all better off in the woods than arguing about deer . people suck.lmao
It's much more fun hunting old school.i can agree

Hey Frankie when I was a kid no one hunted with scopes hardly.the rich yuppie guys had scopes it wasn't till I was a teenager hunting with scopes was a widespread thing..

We hunted with marlin 44mags,Marlin 30-30 , Remington 600 ,shotguns of any kind . surplus military rifles

I'm from back in the Leupold, tasco and redfield old school days.

But yeah my father started me handloading years ago it's I'm just an OCD person who is over top on everything I do.ignore me.i forget this is a hunting forum sometines and not many know my OCD tendencies.lol.
I handload same as competition shooters.

Im sure I'm on wrong forum.lol most of the time cause hunting is easy the rest is the fun part.your gear

Scouting, hunting all that's just a part of life to me.my gear is what I enjoy just cause I can

284 Win is interesting because of its case dimensions... almost like its the WSMs great great great great grandfather. Also because it's fairly rare. You can look on gunbroker at any given time and the number of 284s listed is usually in the single digits. Anything that rare in the rifle world HAS to be cool as a fan.

You gonna pull them pistols, or whistle Dixie?

Most folks having a custom rifle built already have the ammo supply figured out. If not, they’re putting the cart before the horse.

Also…if you’re content with factory ammo, why bother having a custom rifle built? Shoot a factory gun if good enough is good enough.

BCLC ,,, hell most rifles off the shelf is good enough for alabama hunting . there's so many calibers now you can fill any and ever niche for any kind of hunting you want to do .

in my life ive seen all kinda hunters . it aint the gun that kills the deer but good guns help.

Hey you and Jrod I work with and grew up with are identical people I bet.he bust my balls all the time about same stuff

But he ask me every few years says hey you know those bullets you made for me for my rifle that time I gave it to you and you took it to the range and Taylor made ammo .you remember what you used I say yeah bring it on.lol

I got friends just like you I promise.this is same argument we have all the time
Sometimes we are all arguing about the same thing but it's not really an argument just fun of hunting .cause we can 👍

I will say though 284win would be my next choice for f-open f class rifle or a sleek slender longe range hunting rifle.probably build both next or possibly 308 f t/r rifle comp rifle idk we'll see

284win is another cartridge it's ashame it's not as prevalent as 308 win but a gunsmith can make me one shooting long heavy Berger bullets to make me happy.... fat case, hard shoulder angle, high b.c.284 bullets and.308 bolt face I'm in... yeah I want one 😎

It's kinda like me not posting in trapping or hunting section.ive been trapping animals since I was a small kid and hunting deer also

I Really don't see anything that's changed.but only things I've trapped since a kid is yotes and a few coons but still have traps for everything from musk rats, coons, beaver, fox, yotes and bobcats
We sold fur pelts religiously and trapped growing up.not many folks in bama trapped but alot more did years ago it seems.i grew up hunting public land.when you start hunting public land for years it's easy on private land . really easy.lol

Just not much has changed.hunt rubs scrapes and trail cams have made it much easier

Except there's a lot more deer than there used to be
