Looks great, I know you said batting cage would that bat be legal for a game? Is there a “standard “ to be legal

Pretty sure every high school game will be metal bats only. Might be some wooden bat tournaments for summer ball. It would certainly be heavy enough. The length is standard. The barrel diameter should be legal. I don’t see anyone making a fuss about it.

My son uses a wood bat sometimes. The umpires have never even looked at it, as far as i know. Hes been using it ever since he has played varsity school ball. He broke one in a game. Slung the barrel all the way to third base. Umpires didnt say anything. I bought him a new one right after that and he kept right on using it. He only uses it maybe 10% of the time bu hes never caught any flack about it.

If i was him, i would walk right on up to the plate with it just like it was a store bought bat.

HS coach probably wouldn't let a player use it in a game anyway. Swinging a wood bat when everyone else was swinging a hot aluminum would be a big disadvantage.

Here’s my thoughts on that.

Wooden bats were the only option decades ago. Metal bats started being common place in the 70s. By the 90’s, the technology for metal bats made them so hot that home run numbers skyrocketed. I suppose there were also safety concerns given how fast the ball was coming off those bats. Now, technology is limited in metal bats to make them perform closer to how a wooden bat would perform. In theory, this forces hitters to have a better swing and helps scouts judge how the hitter might do at the professional level (wooden only). Even now though, high school players generally need to swing the lighter metal bats and the ball still goes further/faster off the metal. Also, generally speaking, it’s cheaper for high school players to use a metal bat because they can last for years. We used wooden bats one fall in college and saw a guy break two wooden bats in two swings ($$$). That last point is getting a little fuzzy these days with metal bats costing $500+ and some $200 wooden bats made of maple lasting a long time.

I saw Bryce Harper play in Huntsville when he was 12 YO , he could have probably handled a wood bat then. He hit about a dozen HRs one tournament , out of Huntsville Kiwanis Sports Plex fields . Not cheap HRs on 200' pop up fences.

So, how big of a transition is it from metal to wood if you make it into the majors

Ball jumps off Aluminum better. I think I've seen where it will travel about 15-20% more off Aluminum than wood. Sweet spot on wood is smaller too. Centering the ball up and jump off the material the bat is made of is two different things.

Here's a good study on the subject , shows the ball comes off Aluminum 16.37% faster! Makes ya wonder what Micky Mantle could have done if he'd taken care of his body and swung a modern Aluminum bat.

I would love to make a real wooden bat but the hardest part would get a good stave to start with. You understand that the best staves are going to be snatched up for the major leaguers.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.
