We have a beautiful button buck on our place this year.

Me and my son were hunting yesterday afternoon and it came out on the greenfield not far down the powerline from us.

We watched it for almost 30 minutes, It’s almost totally white and has some brown patches on it.

My son asked if we got a shot at one if I would let him shoot it.

That got me to thinking, What’s y’all’s take on shooting piebalds?

On one hand what a once in a lifetime opportunity, but on the other hand they are kind special and I am not sure how I would feel after I shot it.

I’d neck shoot it first chance I got. Have its hide tanned and hang it on my wall. Wouldn’t think twice about it. smile

My son killed a piebald doe when he was 11. We had been seeing it for three years on the lease. My parents and I were the only other ones that hunted the lease and none of us would shoot it because we wanted my son to get her. The second time I ever let him sit alone he got her. Got the hide tanned for him.

She had a normal colored doe yearling with her. 2 seasons later I started getting pics of a doe with a piebald spike with her. Figured it may have been the grandson of the doe he killed. He came out on us youth weekend and I gave my son the green light to shoot him, but he didn’t. Never saw him again.

I had one that was hanging out behind my house a few years back. I just couldn't bring myself to shoot it. I later read that supposedly they all have some sort of deformity and don't live long, idk

Just depends on what mood I was in, if kids wanted to shoot I’d definitely let em.

We had one. First year it was a button buck. 2nd year it was a little 8pt and the tickle in his pickle got him killed that January about 2 miles from our place. He shoulda stayed on our place where he was safe. But we knew it was going to happen. Glad the ole boy was able to kill him a deer of a lifetime.

I don’t think they are good for herd genetic wise I could be wrong but that’s what I’ve heard. Maybe Matt or someone knows the facts.

I always heard they were a genetic defect, and would either be sterile or have defective babies. Don't know for sure, but if I ever see a grown one, I'll have to figure out where to put a full body mount.

I shot a whole magazine at one in Choccolocco WMA many moons ago and didnt skin a hair off that deer. Fast forward to now, and there’s a really pretty piebald doe that hangs around my place in SC. She’s gotten a pass because she’s produced twins multiple seasons and kept them alive. I’ve never seen her in gun season but have had her in the crosshairs during muzzleloader. Just couldn’t pull the trigger with her having spotted fawns. Those fawns were still on the teet. She is shorter than her other doe counterparts. I know she is genetically deficient but if she can keep fawns alive then she’s okay in my book. But she never has shown up during gun season so she obviously knows what she is doing.

We have a fawn this year that that is probably 80/20 brown/white outside the normal white hair. I’m not going to shoot he/she just to shoot, only if it turns in to a shooter buck, but I’m sure it the neighbors won’t let it get that old.

I’d shoot em. My wife who is a vet even says they are a genetic mutation…she doesn’t understand why Tennessee doesn’t let you shoot albinos even..
