What would you say would be the predominant wind direction for central al? I was having this discussion with a friend about best location for a stand on a field to get the most sits with good wind. What are y'all's thoughts?

Everything on our place was set up for N-NW winds. Well the last few years we had more then normal S-SE winds. We had to find and set places to hunt those winds. North or NW is definitely the best hunting winds for us. We’re in South Monroe County.

NNW in a cold front. SSE other times. But it blows different at different places. See what it’s doing at the specific location when the weather calls for it to be out of the North. And the same on a south wind. Set up stands for both so you got options

Put a shooting house for the north wind when it’s cold and a ladder stand for the south wind and it’s warmer.

North-ish.

I wouldn’t try to set a field up to get the most sits. You need to think about setting it up to have the fewest most productive sits. I’d set it up for a W or NW wind if possible and only hunt it during or after a major temp change and cold front.

That’s a novel idea Matt! Who would’ve ever thought about hunting less, to see and kill more. Lol.

^^^hes right you know.

Set up more than one stand with different approaches to them. I have several spots with more than one stand , some very close and well within sight of each other. I'll bet the predominate wind is gonna be SW-NW . Matt's right , don't over hunt a stand and choose the right times to hunt them . Folks have one fav , have cameras and a feeder there. They ride their wheeler in every week , or more , fill their feeder and check the camera , then hunt the fire out of the stand . Then wonder why they can't see a deer in daylight. slap

This was more or less a conversation about setting up stands on newly constructed fields that have had no previous stands before. We were having a discussion about where to place stands to optimally have the best chance to hunt favorable winds when time allows. Basically working M-F and have the greatest chance to hunt the correct winds on limited hunting opportunities as in just the weekend. Not just having one stand that we keep the pressure on all the time. And definitely not hunting the stand in bad winds.

Several stands on the same field. May not be budget worthy but worth a try. Don’t let the wind determine it you sit in the recliner or not.

The driving in and filling the feeder do not bother them in fact I do this to attract deer some times as they come out immediately after I leave but hunting with the wrong wind even once or twice will destroy a stand and cause stop deer movement immediately.imo.

I hunted with some guys at Salt Creek back in the 90s that did this. They put out a little pile of corn before the hunt. They wouldn’t see anything and when they’d get back that afternoon the corn would be gone. One day they decided to just ride the 3 wheeler to the stand like they were picking the guy up. Turned and drove off. Within 30 minutes the deer came to the corn. The deer had them patterned to a T. That worked for a little while but deer figured that out also.

Got me to laughing. One time some folks that hunted the dog out of deer let me go to there patch/corn stand. Not much wind at all that evening. I didn't go to the stand they siggested, but let's just say a nearby stand I knew about. Put some corn out on the field and shot a nice little buck. That day we have no wind can be the best if we have any of those.

I like west to NW for hunting, but its not the predominant wind by any stretch of the imagination.

Hey 2dogs, we could kill every single 5+ buck on the places we do that within a week if we wanted to. They daylight on corn every day.
