That sounds like a great trip. I’ve always wanted to go out west to hunt.
It’s a travesty what happened to the Bobwhite Quail across the southeast.
I grew up hunting quail in soybean fields and coveys by the dozens. It was all but gone by my mid teens.
I love to watch my pointers work in a covey of birds. Nothing beats hunting behind some well trained dogs. They are true masters of their craft.

I remember as a kid you could bust a covey of quail in N Bama every 300 yards. We had great bird dogs. This was in the seventies. No more row crops or fence lines anymore. Coyotes and more predators.

Do they crossbreed? Second from left in the bottom pic looks like a mix.

They’ve been known to hybridize but that bird was a pure male scaled. The males have a lot of chestnut/rusty orange on the lower breast.
