If it’s a relatively slushy snow and a few inches thick, don’t just go driving after clearing your windshield without ALSO getting it off your vehicle’s roof. The first time you get on your brakes good, the sheet of heavy snow will slide off your roof, onto your windshield, blinding you. It will also sort compact where it lands seizing up your wipers. You’ll have to be lucky not to wreck or get rear ended when you have to stop in the road to clear it off.
Reason I know this, is it happened to me last weekend like a dumbazz Dont feel bad, (2010 snow) it happened when I was trying to cut around a traffic barrier the cop just put up to closes the frozen road. Happened right in front of him. Snow slid right down in my view when I hit the brakes cause saw him blocking my path. . I couldn't see the officer laughing at me, but I bet he was. So the road was blocked and I went back home.

I'll give ya'll a tidbit. Stay off the fuggin road. Even if you are good driving in the ice and snow, most are not. If they do something that impacts you, now emergency vehicles have two vehicles impeding response instead of one. And it compounds.
Plus, idiots that wouldn't normally be on the road, see you on the road and think it's ok, they can do it. Now you're a leader in the field of fuggery. And it endangers everyone. It can cost a life of someone who needs emergency services and cannot get that help. The delay can literally kill them.
With that said. I've had the displeasure in 1997 of having the back of a brand new 75' ladder truck break loose at an intersection. Business Fire. It was a four way. Black ice didn't give a damn about the drop down chains we had. Luckily no other vehicles on that road. Back end slid to the left all the way down the hill. I turned into it. It was my turn anyway. The truck obliged me by straightening up. When the call was over, the LT asked me what I was checking in his seat before he got back in. I told him I was ironing the crease out. Chief was behind us on that call. He cut through yards to avoid the black ice. Congratulated me on saving it. He thought we were going to knock down one or two shotgun houses for sure. To be honest, I did too. We left over 3000 feet of fire house frozen to the ground that couple of days. Couldn't reload it without damaging it. That ice storm sucked balls. 2014 sucked too, but I was lucky enough to make it home before it hit and wasn't able to get back once it hit.

Lay a tarp down over steps/deck and flip it off after snow event. I saw a neat one like that, the guy just used painters plastic but he covered his driveway, walkway, sidewalk in front, and some other parts. With one pull he cleared the entire area.

I put my rubber floor mats across the windshield and wipers up.

I lived in Nebraska for almost six years and did a lot of driving on snow and ice. The problem here though is it’s more ice than anything else, as well as all the hills and curves. In the Midwest, roads are flat as a board and straight as an arrow. That said, here are my few tips. When slowing down, coming to a stop, shift the car into neutral so you aren’t working against the engine trying to pull the tires. Also pump the brakes lightly. Never lock down on the brakes. All the videos you see of people sliding all over the road have their brakes locked. On hills and curves, use lower gears, pump the gas lightly if it’s icy. Lightly give it gas through an icy curve instead of braking. Use your floor mats under your tires as traction if you get stuck and start spinning. We used to keep bags of sand in the back of trucks and in the trunks of cars. The added weight gave better traction and we could always open the bag and put some under the tires too. Hurricane candles and tin coffee cans (do they still make tin coffee cans?) was good to keep as well for melting ice around tires or to keep warm in an emergency. We always kept coveralls/blankets in the vehicle too. I don’t miss those days.
