This is real. My FIL who was a civil engineer for USAF grew up in Minnesota and built half the damn Air Force fences and roads across North Dakota and Montana. The big ones that go around Nuke Missile Silos. So he knew is stuff. Especially snow stuff.

He taught me odd snow observations that only builders and engineers see. Me being from the deep south, when I see snow I just see white and cold. He could spot a loose screw on a Stop sign through a snow drift.

Pro-Tip #1 Snow always piles deepest in the spots that rain and moisture always go to but you never see it happening because it drys or runs off before you get a good look at it. Fix that to solve peculiar moisture problems.

Pro-Tip #2 If your roof is covered in snow, look for the thinner snow spots or blank spots. That is where you are loosing heat or something else is going on that needs to be looked at better. If your house is the only house around without snow on the roof you need insulate better overall. Since all your neighbors can see your lack of attention, you better fix it sooner than later.

This thread is for real snow tips that southern folks never would think about. We can make a silly snow-pro-tip thread separate.

I did that trick up here with my roof. Blew in insulation the next year. No bare spots now when it snows

Use nylon rope in a pinch for snow tread on tires. nylon will bite, cotton will slip. Wrap the tires and tighten just like a snow chain. A length of rope in the trunk of a 2 wheel drive vehicle doesn't take up much space and can get you by in an emergency.

When we had the snow last week, I noticed our house had more snow, and longer, on the roof, than virtually every other house on our street facing the same direction. I know our attic is insulated really well, but that made me happy. It's worth noting that we know the folks that built our house...they own an industrial construction/materials company and while they're not a residential home builder, I'd expect them to be more knowledgeable and particular than your average homeowner having a home built.

Your vehicle's brakes probably aren't the best way to stop on icy pavement.

If the rear end of your vehicle begins to slide out, immediately steer hard (as in whip the wheel) into the slide to prevent spin out.

Stay the heck off icy roads...

Pro Tip: There's a BIG difference in driving on snow and driving on ice. "Northerners" like to make fun of us by saying we can't drive on snow. Driving on snow isn't particularly difficult. The problem is we rarely get snow...we get ice, or we get snow that quickly becomes ice. And I don't care how much experience people have at driving on snow, NOBODY can easily and consistently drive on ice, Northerners included.

So the next time you hear someone from the Northern US joke about how none of us can drive on snow, please calmly and politely explain to them exactly why they're a window-licking idot.

There is much truth there, but I've also driven on a lot of black ice when I lived in Colorado as a kid. If I were planning on driving many icy roads nowadays, I'd get a good set or chains of have a spare set of studded tires.

I noticed this week that my roof was still covered in snow when a couple of my neighbors were melting away.

My biggest driving tip is stop going so slow. Half the stranded cars are because the driver hadn't built up enough speed to make a hill. That and coast more. No need to brake if you coast into corners. 4;wheel drive will pull you around corners only if you are in the throttle.

Shovel or scrape off sidewalks, patio and driveways (really anywhere you don't want snow to hang around) asap. The snow doesn't get compacted and create the ice layer.

The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

If you find yourself driving on icy roads, a lot of times you can get better traction by keeping your right side tires off the edge in the grass/snow/dirt. Be careful doing that if the shoulder slopes off steep. If there's no traffic, I have swapped sides before to get on the high side of a banked curve.

Many of the pig trails we call roads in Alabama have no shoulder. Get 6" over the line and its down a dang 50' ravine. That's a good tip otherwise.

I tend to slow down a little and make sure all my drive is smooth and easy. Sure did appreciate the 4wd on my tundra last week.

Work smarter not harder...leaf blower. Early and often if need be. A lot less work.

Don’t be the idot that wants to drive 70 mph on the interstate. Give your self plenty of stopping distance. Don’t buy milk and bread. Get good stuff for stews and chili and cornbread. Hang out with your lady and have fun. Carry on.

If you don't have the skill or the vehicle for driving in it just stay at home.

Don't worry about the milk and bread
.
If you run out of TP it's gonna be okay and if it isn't okay there isn't much you can do about it anyhow.
