Sadly, their quality is down. Just search the internet and you will see what I mean.

To add a scope to the list, I just got my 2nd Viper HD scope. It’s new for the year. Improved glass and coatings.

To me, this thing is optically on par with the VX-5 for 500-600 bucks. Plus, it has an illuminated dot.

Great looking scopes. However, I'm not a fan of the cluttered up , BDC reticle for woods hunting. So many scopes are great, but lack a good , closer range , deer killin' reticle.

Surprisingly Burris hasn’t even been mentioned.

Burris got bought out and combined with Steiner. They are still making some of the best US made scopes, but the product line is weird.

Not a lot of good reticle choices.

I have the MeoSport R and a MeoStar. The big difference is in low light. I had to turn on the illumination to see the reticle to harvest a cow elk in the shade of trees. I have taken multiple animals with my MeoStar and never used illumination.

A great shooter once told me that you should spend 3+ times the amount of the gun on optics if you want a satisfactory set up. IMO he was spot on.

Respectfully disagree. 500 buck scope will be sufficient for 99 percent of Alabama hunters. 500-750 offers exceptional glass.

750-1000 gets you alpha minus 1.

Spending 3-4K on a hunting scope is a waste IMO.

I agree, a good midrange scope with a deer killing reticle and a great pair of binos is where it's at. IMO

I tote a Sako Finnlight , that math would put me totin' a $4,000 ish scope around in the mountains . Not gonna happen !

I spend a good amount of $$$$ on my glass but this is horseshit. A scam guideline to get you to spend more than you need to, just like the diamond people recommend 2 months salary to buy a diamond rings for your fiancé.

A younger person with good eyes can do fine spending $600 +/-.Over the hill, spend more. The improvement in glass decreases with money spent until you're not getting much more even though you are spending a lot more. However, when your eyes need all the help they can get, just to do what was no problem thirty years ago, those small gains mean a lot.

To the discussion I will ad that "buy once, cry once" does not apply to optics. Coatings age. Technology advances. Buy what you need to last several years, then expect to buy again to stay in the same tier.

All that fancy glass ain't worth a hoot if you can't see the reticle when it's show time.

Unfortunately, this is the reality for me these days. I struggle with cheap and mid range scopes that used to be fine. I need the best glass I can afford now in my binos and scopes. As for the reticle, give me a single precise aiming point. I can range and dial if needed but that would be rare for me.

i wish Nikon hadn’t gotten out of optics - i’ve had this Buckmasters scope on my gun for a long time - it just has a simple crosshair … it’s showing it’s age on the outside but is still working great … i guess when it finely quits i’ll check out some of the Vortex stuff

a simple, clear reticle with good light-gathering qualities would be very high on my list - like others, my eyesight is starting to suffer in low light conditions … makes shooting my bow an even greater challenge now

Im recovering from a torn and detached retina in my shooting eye. One thing I know for sure, my next scope will have an illuminated dot in the center of the reticle.

You got it , a medium / heavy duplex or #4 with illuminated dot is the bomb . My go to deer rifle has a VX-R 2-7 X 33mm Duplex Firedot on it . For woods hunting it works very well for my 65 year old eyes.
