So can Mississippi River and other Barge Pilots start driving in most direct path again?
I think our River fishing folks here know what I am talking about. Barges having to drive in curves. Having to avoid an environmental thing that is under mud and silt and 50 feet of water bullsh1t.?

Not kidding, I had to specifically peg with professional "under river" surveyor assistance the location of a 2 foot tall Indian mound, 40 foot diameter, that is under about 8 feet of silt and mud and on low level days 15 feet of water. The barges and other traffic have to steer around it.
My official comment in that report says on the first line.

Sounds more like environmental regs than CG regs. CG was probably told to enforce it.

I had a mussel diver friend made a homemade har that he would drag around on top of mounds to loosen up mud . Come back few days later after river current washed it away a pick up arrowheads . I seen couple huge fluted cumberlands he found doing that . Got to point where game warden check your boat if dive near a mound . That ended yrs ago . Mussel diving went away here . Too many regulations

That might be the case. I did the job for 8 different agencies and Coast Guard who had to "management check" each agencies final report cross checked to my plan. Damnedest bunch of government inter-related mess you ever saw.
I guess the barges were required under penalty of CG, imminent threat of having a lesbian named Kristen sit in the wheel house with the captains, got the boats to turn in the most damn inconvenient places they can on purpose. .

The mussel guys are documented in Archaeological literature that is in text books. So I had to learn all I never wanted to know about how the mussel fishing thing works. When folks wonder why I seem to something about everything, I kinda had to learn something about everything; -- like mussel fishing.

One of my best friends still dives. He’s about the only one left around here. His buyer passed away and now they have to buy an entire container to send overseas. There is a lot to it and the buyers dictates what shells they want. Most of the markets have switched to synthetics he says. They’re numerous species you gotta know and teaches the new GWs about it. There some rare ones along this river system. He had some very nice collections of artifacts. That market crapped out to he says. I had other friends that pretended to be mussel divers that were artifact hunters in reality. My friend has made a living his entire life off of the river.

It is a notably strange relationship between mussel fishing and archaeology that folks find damn strange and we do to.

I have a buddy that's the H60 Maintenance Officer at AS Ventura, he hunted elk with me this year and we BS'ed a lot while hiking.
He's so ready to bounce it's crazy with all the political BS that came out the last 4yrs.

Had a guy who learned all the great downriver offshore spots before all the electronics ruined it. He knew how to line up on them by triangulating 3 spots on the banks got me started fishing down there. Anyways his best spots were from his partner who was a muscle diver and would float up a jug when he found the big smallies. He showed me one spot just below the trace where a small creek runs on the north bank (Maybe Brush Creek). Its a couple hundred yards or more off the shoreline. I thought it was a shell bed but he says its flint from the Indians making points there. Said his friend the diver would not go near that spot. Swore to him he dove it once and heard Indians on horses and what sounded like a pow wow going on under water. I laughed when he told me and he thought it was funny too. He said he has no clue what the man heard but that he was an honest man with no reason to lie about it and would never even fish that spot. We caught a few there.

Snake ditch. It’s well known also an Indian mound west of it. Also an Indian mound across on the south side at the mouth of a creek. It’s in trace property waters.

Did you hear about the guy that dug a grave and got a skull. Put it on his mantle and all kinds of bad juju happened to him. Wrecked his car and when he got out of hospital went and took it back and put in place.

They made serious bank back in the day. Not so much now.
The buyer was out of Big Sandy in TN but he’s gone now. Been there a time or two and I didn’t realize the variety of colors from certain states etc….. really cool to see the different colors.
