From the shot location to pond is probably 300 yards. But, as I said, he bedded downs within 100 yards of where I shot him and probably would have died there had I not bumped him messing with my gun.

Where did you hit him and what ammo are you using? Just behind the diaphragm. Winchester Deer Season XP 130gr in .270. That’s a ballistic tip round. His insides were liquified. We didn’t do a thorough post mortem evaluation but I did not see an exit wound. Every other deer I’ve hit with that bullet has dropped DRT with absolutely devastating effects on the vitals so I knew I had pulled the shot. I am considering going to the “Power Point” bullet next year. I hate the animal suffered no matter how short lived so that’s on me but at least we made a recovery.

You put in the effort to recover him. I like fast expanding rounds. I also like a clean exit…so I am always torn.
