So far I’ve got 19 sets out and plan on at least a dozen more
Had to miss last season due to timber being cut so now we have a surplus of dogs running the property

I’m getting some DPs ready. Never done this but if I could take a few coins off my bullock lease, I’d be happy. I need a few coyotes off too but not so sure I can catch one.

Not sure how you are setting them up but here is a cheap and easy way to set them up someone showed us. 3/32 cable and some electric fence wire crimps. You just put it around a tree and put the trap through the loop and it’s ready to go.

Its not really to terribly difficult.....There's a trapping store down in Ramer that has everything you need.....The MB-550's are the ones I used baited with Cavens Hiawatha Valley in a simple dirt hole set around field edges or road junctions......Just make sure to take the time to bed the trap well so it doesnt move

Just about any dry cat food will work for bait and it’s cheap

Doc,

You can catch coyotes. Problem is that you need the right gear (trapping hammer, sifter, lure, traps, anchors, etc.) I think I remember seeing some starter sets on some trapping supply websites. Get an auger bit that fits a cordless drill to make the dirt holes. Watch a video on how to night latch your traps and do that. K9 Extremes are already coated and don't need boiling and waxing. Plenty of online videos on making dirt hole sets. Look for road intersections with coyote tracks and set on these types of locations. CNC hit the nail on the head for coyote traps - learn how to bed the trap solid so that it does not rock if the edge is stepped on. I found my coyote catch rate went up when I put a a good spoonful of Pedigree dog food in the bottom of the dirt hole (not the chunky gravy type but the potted meat looking type) and the bait and lure on top of that. It is addicting. Good luck. I will be glad to come down in early April and go around very early in the morning and help you check the traps. smile

Don't give up, don't ever give up!

I use chain on my anchors with a quick link to my trap chain
When I pull my traps I just use the quick link and leave my anchors and when next season comes I’ll hook up to them and remake my sets

I'm so sick of being in this machine shop. I'm pissed I didn't just load all my gear up and go just for a piece of mind this morning. I think tracking deer makes me go feral for a few months. Takes awhile to get back civilized 🤣

You’re using a closed jaw trap in that set right ?
I’ve never made these type sets but have used snares with great results

Is there a solution that you know of to get around the hogs?

Ended up having to pull my line today due to rabbit hunters. Setting up again this weekend somewhere else though. Nothing but a mangy starved pit bull today. Felt sorry for him till he started growling and biting at me.

Thanks johnv! Seems like you got the beaver thing down to a science. The property owner wants me to help with a beaver issue now. I know nothing and he has bought some traps. The beavers are girdling pine trees that are 20 inches in diameter, around 25 to be exact. I'm not even sure what traps he has bought, might be asking some advice in the next few weeks.

Thanks johnv, I'm heading to the property in the morning. Going to set some DP's and a couple of hog traps for Thursday night and then pull them Friday with rain coming Saturday around 2:00 am. Property owner is going to try and be there tomorrow so I'll see what he's got.

Pulled everything today. Hopefully got what was left of the beavers. Some have been shot and they had already blew the huts up with tannerite so who knows. Took out 2 males and 2 huge females

If people asked you to come to their land and trap beavers what would you say is a fair price? My duck farm planting is looking real bad this year. Can't compete with big money
