So answer this question for me……Let’s say the small inner circle in the middle of the pic below represents 5000 acres and the outer circle represents 100,000 acres…….Lets say we start out with fairly similar deer densities of 100 deer per square mile through the whole 100,000 acres as well as fairly similar habitat……I'm just throwing out easy to work with numbers.....

[Linked Image]

Now lets say that the land around the 5,000 acre inner circle suddenly increases doe harvest this season and lowers the DPSM for the surrounding area…….My question is…….what will the DPSM be for both areas by the time next season rolls around??......Just generally speaking in concept….will the inner circle keep the same 100 DPSM or will it even out with the population around it?? What say ye’ experts?

Depends on the habitat of the 5000 vs the 100,000 as to how much it would change. It might change some. It might change a lot. If the 5000 is great habitat it’s going to continue to draw deer off the 100,000. If it’s not then the DPSM should drop.

Must be locals that hunt the 100,000 acres. They shot every deer that moved, cut out the blackstrap and dumped the carcasses on the 5000 acres.

We put out corn and sweet feed laced with AirTags. This really worked great. 22% of the deer never went 600-800 yards away from the feeders. 16% of the population traveled up to one mile away. 37% ranged from well over 5 miles+. 25% tracked shat there tags out really pretty quick and out of satellite range. The study is still in the works. Several raccoons have eaten the deer dropping and this is really screwing up the study. We all know you track ok…….. but 100,000 acre study dang are you willing to follow deer this far??????????

Are you factoring in predation on recruitment year over year or looking at a static numbers population? I think deer are going to stay where they can make a living so long as other outside pressures are constant. If the neighbors around the 5000 are reducing does substantially but not the coyote population then I can see where there will be a greater effect on fawn mortality in both the depleted areas and into the 5000 where the doe population remains higher. But I’m no biologist. That just makes sense to me with little understanding of the actual science.

Not a bullchit question.......The question is......Can you continue to hold high densities of deer on a property while the density is lowered all around you if habitat is equal??

I’m gonna try to use coonass logic here. In the situation you’re describing, I would think the population would actually go up on the 5k acre tract due to the locals banging away at every deer that’s moves on the 100k acre tract. The pressure will make the deer move to a less pressured place. This is and will always be my argument against a large number of deer being killed off the same corn piles. We all know how deer react to pressure. Unless you have a constant flow of new deer at a corn pile, our experience is once you shoot a couple deer on said corn pile, they will avoid the area in the daylight hours. I would think that deer anywhere in the state would react the same way as deer in South Monroe County. Perhaps I’m giving deer north of to much credit for being as smart as southern deer. Perhaps I’m wrong on my logic all together.

Typically, deer do not move to less pressured areas once the pressure starts. They’re still there. They just move at different times or use different routes. I have not found that deer migrate to areas with less pressure at all. Given that a considerable percentage of deer along the fringes of the 5k are going to also use acreage on the other, it will definitely have a direct impact on the 5K.

I might could relate to the question if the acreage was 500 and 50.
I have no idea what 5000 acres looks like, much less 100k acres.

My opinions and comments are my own. They do not reflect the position or political opinions of Aldeer or any of the Aldeer administration.

What’s funny and ironic about folks crawfishing away from this one is that it’s a very realistic scenario that’s likely playing out right now as we speak…..Of course the charts above are very simplified versions of the real world scenario just to represent the concept……

Can a “plantation” continue to hold the same high numbers of deer if the population around them is brought down to much lower levels?......Did that massive increase in doe harvest in Bullock Co impact everyone?

So you’re saying that if deer are constantly shot at or pushed around by human presence on one property that they will not move to a neighboring property with little to no shooting and minimal human presence? I understand them changing their habit and travel patterns especially going nocturnal. Maybe I’ve just been seeing things wrong all these years with the way deer behave on some of the areas I’ve hunted. Thanks for the insight.
