Ok gurus this is my Papaws gun that he got recently when his brother passed. It was My Great Grandfather's and this is the only markings on the gun. Other than a really old single shot 12ga, what do I got?

Likely one of the many "hardware store" private label shotguns widely available in the early and mid 1900's. If you look hard there is almost certainly some trace of marking on the left side of the receiver, but they often weren't engraved deeply and can hide easily under the patina that forms. There also may be markings on the underside of the barrel or lug if you take it apart. Monetarily, they're worth very little, but the sentimental value can be priceless. take it out and enjoy a day in the field with it if you can.

Dont really have a desire to shoot if with the split fore stock which is a little loose. I believe the barrel is fine and it would likely fire safely. I was just hoping someone might have one similar that could provide some insight. Pretty neat piece that maybe I will own one day. I have my Papaws old stevens 16ga sxs on the wall in my trophy room. This would make a nice addition. I vaguely remember as a kid it hanging over my Great Grandfathers doorway at his house. Thanks for any and all insight boys to possible age and maybe a manufacturer.

I'm no expert, but it looks like a HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON ARMS Model 1908.

There were 4 or 5 manufacturers that made nearly identical shotguns and would private label them for anyone who would make a big enough order. There are literally hundreds (maybe even thousands) of private label "brands" of the same shotgun made by one of a few manufacturers, H&R, Iver Johnson and Stevens were some of the main manufacturers.

We grew up shooting those old crack barrel 12ga. Certain shells would kick so hard the barrel would fall open after the shot. Many ducks and geese died to those things back then but you’d go home with a sore shoulder and a headache after every hunt. Just seeing the picture gave me a headache.

Iver Johnson?
Just for fun I checked out some Iver Johnson innerwebs info.
If it is an IJ (and I think it is) then it was made in the early 1900s.
A couple of auctions place them around $200 value. But everyone claims they are very durable and many still in use today.

Was gonna say that’s what it looks like, to me, but they all sort of look like that from the era.

My papaw said he's shot it once but never wanted to shoot it again. No telling what load the old man slipped in there on him. The barrel on this one looks to have been sawed off some and a hole drilled in the top for a bead but there is no bead on it. The hole looks awful. Im betting my great grandfather did it in his shop. Neither of them ever hunted to my knowledge.
