I picked up a Ball basic canning kit at Walmart to try to make pickles once. They actually came out pretty good but was a lot of work. If I had a productive garden I would definitely can and buy something more elaborate to do it with.

My wife and I plan on doing a bunch of canning this year…we shall see.
By the time you purchase canning supplies, seed, fertilizer, etc. it will probably be cheaper to just go buy groceries.
We could certainly go to Birmingham to the Farmers Market and purchase our vegetables for canning and not have to worry with a garden but we enjoy gardening AND one reason for doing this is to hopefully have healthier food without herbicides and pesticides in it.

It's not about cost for us. Just like with hunting, it's providing for your family in the event you had to.

We got an All-American 921 several years ago. It's more fun and novelty, but it ain't worth the effort unless we had several mouths to feed. The juice ain't worth the squeeze. I did try a couple pints of deer and it turned out good.

We can alot every year, most of my food is grown and raised right here. But if you’re just getting started and haven't bought any equipment or supplies. I strongly recommend looking into freeze drying. It's much simpler to learn, alot easier to do, and preserves food for alot longer. If I can help you get started let me know. Either canning or freeze drying. It's not about cost for us, 50% of vegetables don't come from the us. Over 80% of tomatoes are foreign. The chemicals and gmo is unbelievable. It's about producing our own and knowing what we eat for us. I can vouch for their freeze dried tomatoes. Onions and okra. Really tasty. I just made a deer burger for dinner and used some of their freeze dried tomatoes and onions and they give it more flavor.

I think some folks can to be able to open up quick "heat and eat" meals when life is busy and I don't know how well the freeze dried stuff would do. I have a friend who has one and she has done some candy that she has been selling and did some powdered eggs and a few vegetables. She just recently did some meals that had the meat, pasta and veggies all in one, but I have no idea what the end result will be once cooked.
