Since browning fixed the horrible triggers, the new BARs actually shoot pretty dang good. My buddy just bought one in a 7-08 and I was surprised at how well it shot with 150gr Norma whitetail. Really nice rifles also. Just about every brand of rifle nowadays shoot way better then most people can shoot. Definitely better than I can shoot them. Always had excellent performance from savage but I bought a Tikka T3X Hunter this year and it’s a really great shooting rifle.

You looking at new or gently used ? How much ya wanta spend?
I've owned several pre-76, true Belgium BARs, in various calibers and all were good shooters , some just as good or better as off the shelf bolt guns.

There's a reason why the Remington 700 has been one of the best military sniper rifles for 50 years.

Savage 110s are probably the ugliest bolt rifle this side of a Mosin Nagant. They shoot quite well out of the box. Any decent bolt gun that feels good in your hands inside 200 yards is the best pick. And yes the new Remington 700s are included.

There's a reason why the Remington 700 has been one of the best military sniper rifles for 50 years. I bought my son an inexpensive ADL prob 5 years ago in 308. Shoots hornady AM whitetail a little under MOA and it will cloverleaf my handloads.

I have a custom rifle that I built from a 1986 model 700 barreled action with a 3lb Timney trigger. Bedded action, fully floating barrel in a walnut stock that I trimmed, cut and fitted with LOP specifically measured to my arm. I've got some prettier and fancier rifles but non can match the 700 for consistency.

Tikka or Bergara both my Tikkas shoot sub moa but picky on ammo, I spent a lot of $ figuring that out. Ended up being 165 SST and 150 Fusions. The Bergara is less picky. The only thing that’s weird about it is that it will throw a cold bore shot high and left by 3” That's kinda odd , my son has a .308 Tikka T3 stainless and it'll shoot anything you put in it , readi loads or hand loads , it likes them all.

Target rifles? I cold bore sight all my hunting rifles. That first shot is the one that counts on a hunting rifle. Just my opinion of course.

Understand the desire for an accurate rifle but for 200 yards there are a lot of options about any rifle will be accurate enough for 200 yard shooting. I might get a classic or even an autoloader.
Like a Savage 99 or something cool in .308. Old Tang Safety Ruger 77 or.......?
Would NOT buy a junky new gun, Savage, Tikka, etc. Would shoot good but you'd have nothing special IMO. They are all cheap.
I'd get a Kimber or something like that if I had to have a bolt gun in .308.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.

I got a Fierce Twisted Rival .308 and have been very pleased so far. Muzzle Break and threaded for a can. Retail about $2500 +/- before you put glass on it.

Steyr for bolt action, Browning BLR for non bolt action. Henry had a lever action out now that a BLR wouldn’t touch. It’s a better rifle and wayyyy better trigger for less money. In my opinion

In my opinion I bought a .308 BLR- love everything about the gun but as you say, trigger is horrible-compared to the other .308's I own( Fierce is best/ Thompson Center is better as well).

Find a Remington 700 SPS Tactical with the 20" barrel. Both of mine shoot sub MOA to at least 300 yards and no cold bore shift. Put a Timney trigger in or adjust the factory trigger and never look back. Speer 165gr PSPBT or 168gr Hornady A-MAX over 41.8 grains of IMR 4895 in Lapua brass set off with a CCI 200 primer shoots one cloverleaf at 100 yards.

I don’t i have owned a pile of browning bar rifles. Never had one that wouldn't shoot less than moa. You just have to find what it likes. I have a bar mk3 dbm 18" barrel. 308 now that will shoot close to 1/2" with 150gr hornady superformance sst. I have a 1981 bar grade 1 .270 that hates superformance but loves hornady outfitter gmx.

I’d look for a gently used Abolt 2. We have one with a 24 or 26” barrel, can’t quite remember which. It’s long and accurate.

There's a reason why the Remington 700 has been one of the best military sniper rifles for 50 years. Have 3 in the safe in 308 and every one of them are 1/2 moa with about any ammo
