Trying to decide on the next toy. Torn between these two, and have to escape my fascination with short mags. What have you all experienced with these two?

I looked at both myself but settled on the PRC.
Dropped two with it this season, but I imagine the 280 would have gave the exact same results.

I think 280 is going to give you slightly lower recoil but will be a tad harder to find.
They’re really both in the same class so it’s more of just personal preference.

IMO, it comes down to how you use it and if you reload or not.

the 7prc definitely has more HP than the 280ai and factory ammo is more available and is optimized for the heaviest, high BC bullets. It does require a larger magnum action and youll only get 2-3 rounds in a magazine.

280ai is a Goldilocks round IMO as far as speed/performance/recoil but not as much factory ammo available and in general is optimized for bullets in the 145-160 weight class, you'll get 4-5 rounds in most magazines and you can use a slimmer standard action but I wouldnt reccomend it to anyone who doesn't reload.

Normal hunting stuff up to semi long range, 280AI

Truly dedicated long range, 7 PRC

Quite a few factory options for the .280 Ackley, and it's very effective on critters. It kills big, but with recoil similar to a .308.

My concern with the 7mm PRC is how new it is. Will it be here in 10 years? It also has significantly more recoil and muzzle blast, similar to a 28 Nosler or a 7mm RUM.

I do reload, but am not quite to the avid level yet. Usage is multi-purpose whitetail hunting exlusively, as that's all I do. I try to avoid hunting anything that would require shots longer than 300 yards, but I've take a buck at 480yds with the .280 Rem. 90% of my hunting is done from a climber where my shots could range from 10-200yds. I have a plethora of guns that check all of those boxes. Like many, I love guns, am fascinated by ballistics and have probably made too many "cool factor" rifle purchases in the past (.325 wsm, .300 RCM, .350 Rem Mag)

I can tell you that I was faced with the same decision a couple years back and I ended up choosing the 280ai and I've loved it! That doesn't mean I won't still consider a 7PRC in the future, but with the release of the 7 BC cartridge and confirmation that accuracy is outstanding and cartridges are easily reloadable, I would jump over the PRC and go right up to the 7BC

I’m pretty sure the 7prc is a long action.

yes, both 7prc and 280ai can fit in a standard (long action) length, but the 7prc requires a larger diameter action and bolt/bolt-face in some platforms.

How does a 7mm PRC stack up against a 7mm WSM ballistic wise?

How’d the recoil on that .280AI? I’ve heard it was fairly mild for what the gun is.

Think 7mm Rem Mag energy with .308 Win recoil. I have owned 4 different .280 Ackley rifles, and they all shot great. Recoil has never been more than a comparable weight .308 Win.

It’s very mild, my Kimber weights just under 7 lbs ready to go, with the factory brake recoil is never on my mind and can easily shoot 50-60 round sessions without feeling beat up at all.
