We just don't hear about it much. Character is not developed in moments of temptation and trial. That is when it is intended to be used.

I met Alvin's youngest son up at the state park ( his home) in Pall Mall a few years ago. Wasn't many people there that day and we got to talk to him at length about his father. Had the wife with me, and after visiting the monument she said she would include him in the WWI part of her curriculum (she teaches US History). A lot of the younger generation doesn’t hear about these types of heroes. While all who served honorably are heroes, these types of stories show that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary things in improbable circumstances. Kids these days need to see and hear more of that.
