I have 50 acres of 40 year old loblolly that have been thinned three times over the years. I have conducted spraying and burns several times. My goals are to increase the value of the stand, reduce woody competition and pine seedlings and improve wildlife value. The past two burn cycles, I have scheduled the burn for the week of May 1st. We have quail, turkey and other ground nesting birds that we see in these two stands. What is the best time to burn without negatively impacting ground nesting birds AND keeping sweetgums from establishing a foothold?
September/October.
