what is the actual benefit of expensive crappie rods vs cheap ones (<$50ish)? If you're slip-cork fishing, it's irrelevant and when I'm jig fishing, I've never had any trouble seeing or feeling even the slightest little bites. Most of my bites come on slack line anyway, on the fall, so you don't feel it, you see the line jump/twitch.

Well growing up we had a cane patch on our place. Cut you some. Hang them to dry and varnish them. I had cane poles that lasted 25 years. I’m just an old redneck.

I tightline with minnows a good bit and it makes a heck of a difference.

So what's the advantage of a 10' rod for crappie? Are you just using it as a pole, or is there some advantage in casting with a rod that long?

I hardly ever fish with bait, but I think it's something of an advantage to have a decent quality graphite rod for fishing jigs. Anything that gives you more sensitivity has gotta help a little. I build my own crappie rods and use a 7' blank light action that only weighs 1.3 oz. My thumb is over the line and the forefinger is on the blank; I don't think he can hit without me feeling it. But I see folks fishing with those 10' rods and I don't understand why.

Thanks! Makes sense to use them the way you and Lux describe. I've seen folks just casting open water with them and didn't understand the advantage there.
I usually use 6.5-7 footers for casting, but I do have a 10’ ACC I’ll use for deep vertical drops. I rig it like a Carolina rig with a jig on the leader. The heavier C rig weight helps me get down to the school quicker and maintain line control in wind or current. A guy at work sold me that pole for $25. I had to figure out a way to use it. lol.
