If your plot areas weren’t sterilized for some reason, things are going to grow there without your help. I’d concentrate on the lime and getting the pH up to at least 6.2. Depending on your soil type, I’ll assume it’s a sandy loam, you’ll need to add lime regularly and keep in mind it takes months to do its work. Let the plots grow up in whatever will volunteer. If they are really bare in July maybe some buckwheat will help. Let it grow and go to seed, mow it off and let that seed come back up. Start with cereal grains in the fall and clover if you want to take another swing at it. I get these to grow just fine by either broadcasting into standing vegetation(less than 1 foot tall ideally) and mowing it down to 4-5” OR spraying to kill vegetation, wait a few weeks, then broadcast seed and use a drag to scarify the surface and get good soil contact. Do either right before a good rain with more rain in the forecast.

have been impressed with the performance of maton rye in clarke co this year, was overseeded dec 10-15th, came up quick and made it through the two cold snaps better than anticipated. will be adding it to sandy soil list in the future
Give me bout 15 more minutes, I was dreamin about beavers.......... Si Robertson

Thank you for your reply. I’m kicking myself for not throwing out rye this fall but thinking of trying the same with buckwheat but also thinking sorghum and millet. I’m not far from you. Over in Natchez, technically, with mostly sandy loam except for decayed limestone clay in the creek flat. I’m going to be trying sorghum and millet this summer also with IC peas, buckwheat, mung beans and some leftover okra added to another spot.

Thanks for the help. My samples called for 2 tons per acre of lime and like 300-500 lbs an acre of 0-20-20 so my gut was to get this out as soon as it dries enough that I can drag the buggy across them. I appreciate the replies. Go and get some 0-46-0 and 0-0-46 and skip the 0-20-20. I usually special order it. Buckwheat would be the easiest to broadcast ahead of rain. Give it 2 weeks and then you can probably broadcast something else into the emerging buckwheat. Clay peas will grow about anywhere. This fall, broadcast cereal rye into it ahead of rain, and that should help build your organic material base for next spring. Then come in and broadcast into the standing rye and mow it.

Throw enough N on a paved parking lot and it will grow corn in the cracks. Throwing Chemicals out like chicken scratch all the time can get expensive.
The most effective thing that nobody ever does or talks about.... Manure. Get bagged Manure and spread it on there and thank me later.
No government employees were harmed in the making of this mess.
