A good buddy of mine has his opening day shoot every year up toward Oneonta and has some sunflower, sorghum and top sowed wheat every year that we will bush hog and burn about 3 to 4 weeks before opening day. I am maybe wanting to try something a little different to hopefully draw in more birds this year. Tell me about planting foxtail please? I've read some of yall plant it a little earlier maybe? Tell me the do's and donts, when to plant, when to cut and what can we expect. Thanks!!

I planted some of the WMS Dove Mix that had Foxtail in it, produced a ton of seed. I planted it as a field border for turkey and hopefully quail rather than a dove plot. It produced a ton of seed. If you used the WMS mix, plant early, the Sesame took forever to dry down and I assume you might have to burn it down with Gly to get it ready for season.
"Cull" is just another four letter word...

I've only planted it in the WMS mix that kbush mentioned. It doesn't take long for the foxtail to head out. I just looked back at some pictures I made last time I planted it - I planted last week of May and it was headed out by June 20. Other plants in the mixture, like Egyptian wheat, were not mature by then, but the foxtail was. I don't think there was any of it left when dove season started, but it drew some in to the field in July and August and got them to using it.
I would think you need to plant much later than I did if planting a field of foxtail alone. Good luck with it!

If you're in the Birmingham area, where are you buying your foxtail millet at and how much should I expect to pay?
