I've been really interested in this since it was surrounded by mystery.

It turns out his wife died of Hantavirus (rat shit poisoning) and then he died from heart disease and Alzheimer's about a week later. This all make sense as Hantavirus is not unusual in the West. She died a week or so before he did and he was on a lot of meds for his heart disease. She apparently was the one making sure he took all his meds. His Alzheimer's was pretty advanced and without her to tell him to take his meds, he didn't take them and it caught up with him pretty quickly.

Lord, please help us get our nation straightened out.

Why do 90 year olds not have anyone check in on them in a week?

Happens more than you think.

Probably because they were reclusive and assumed his wife was alive and caring for him (?). Some old folk’s circle gets pretty small as they really advance in years. Also - if you’ve been around someone really aged and sick, you realize they need as much hand on help as they can get. A lot of people quickly realize that and don’t come around anymore.

No, she was dead approx. a week before he died. Then it took awhile before they were found. It makes perfect sense now.

The sad aspect of their story is the fact that their family didn't have regular contact with them. I think I heard their daughter hadn't called in months.

^^^^ I completely agree with both ^^^^

I suspect that his wife thought she could provide the necessary care for him, but since she passed first - nobody else was doing a welfare check.

His wife was in her mid 60's, probably took care of everything including his money. wink

Still, surprising that no one checked on them for two weeks. One would think that home health care would have been involved in some capacity.

Wasn’t the dog dead too? I guess nobody was alive to feed or water it and it died. I guess.
