Informal poll..which is it?

1. Breakfast Dinner Supper
2. Breakfast Lunch Dinner
3. Breakfast Lunch Supper

I have been #1 my whole life. Even in school I ate dinner in the lunch room. Seems like even people who say supper for the later meal say lunch for middle meal. So it is really frustrating to get asked to come to dinner for barbecue on Saturday. I expect to get there at 11 and eat some pork or brisket. Guess my reaction when the say they are having hamburgers and hot dogs at 7. I'm beginning to feel like I imagine Winchester from MASH to feel. Don't anybody have any culture any more? Luckily I wasn't the only one. The other two normal people went with me to a BBQ joint that serves beer. We did swing back by to see if any hot dogs were left.

#2 or #3. In my circle the evening meal is supper or dinner. You'd get the stink eye/sideways glance if you referred to lunch as dinner.

Does bug me when some say the're going to BBQ, like it's a verb. In my entire existance (50+ years) my people say grill as a verb. Example: Your dad is going to grill burgers tonight. BBQ (or barbeque) is a meat product typically from pork or beef. It is not (& never has been in the American south) a verb indicating you're grilling meat outside.

All good though, we're all different, some of us are just wrong if they don't understand & the concepts above.

I believe dinner was traditionally in the middle of the day and the largest meal of the day

It varies from day to day.

2 or 3 depending on who I am talking to about meals except for holidays and some Sundays when the big meal is midday.

I grew up with #2 always except for the holiday meals. When I moved here, I started using "supper" for the evening meal because so many others do. But, I usually include a reference to time of day when I ask someone if they want to come over to eat or meat somewhere to eat.

"Do y'all want to meet at (insert restaurant name) tomorrow night to eat?"

When I text our youngest son, it is always "Do y'all have supper plans on such and such night?" He and his wife work days M-F so it is probably inferred that supper would mean evening time, but I still ask like that.
