..ever lost a fishing rig due to a Fish pulling it into the water ? I think I have lost at least two. My favorite story about this was back in Indiana. Chinook salmon would run up a Lake Michigan tributary known as Burns Ditch. These were big fish but rarely had any real interest in bait. People would set out 3 staggered lines with the hope of them catching the line in their open mouths , and then being slammed in the side of the head with a hook. Believe it or not, this often worked. It was pretty well known that you better keep a close eye on those rods. People would line the banks doing this daily. One day a guy retreated a short distance away to answer natures call. He was peeing while looking over his shoulder at his 3 rods. Just at that moment one of them bobbed a couple times, and shot off into the water ! This cat whirled around and ran for the bank and executed a water entry dive that any Olympian would be proud of. But alas, it was gone. We all gave him a round of applause as he slogged back to the bank.

Lost two on Smith lake. Number one was my stupid fault. Fishing for stripers one night rod laying on on the dock. I looked away for 5 seconds. Rod and reel gone. The second one was accidentally kicked overboard by my daughter. Probably $400 in 90 ft of water.

I nearly lost one a couple of weeks ago. Had been throwing a crappie jig but not getting any bites. Started seeing something chasing shad behind us in open water, so I dropped the crappie rod quick and grabbed a different rod with a fluke on it to throw at what I assumed was bass. didn't realize that my crappie jig was hanging about a foot into the water off the side of the boat.
Caught a white bass feeding on the shad and while I was getting the hook out of its mouth, all of a sudden I saw my crappie rod go flying. I caught the handle right as it was about to go under and pulled it back up with another white bass on it that had grabbed the jig hanging off the side of the boat.

Yep had a lure in the water behind my canoe and the pole laying down and a fish pulled it off the back of the canoe into 6’of water. Luckily we were able to see and retrieve it. Then the same rod and reel got run over while we were getting all the gear loaded up.

3...1 by a catfish in a pond..my dad fished it out an hour or so later. Second was sauger fishing somewhere down from g'ville dam...double clutched on hook set in 25deg weather...rod flipped outta my hands and to the bottom. Had another pulled from boat while trolling for crappie on little bear. No clue what took that one, it just got gone quick.

Yep. Fishing in a cold rain below Wilson dam in the current. Had already hung a couple big stripe mixed in with the samllmouths. Hand was wet, foot on trolling motor, reaching back to grab something and had the rod gripped below the bait caster when what must have been a mega stripe that hit so hard my new Shimano sailed right out of my hand. All I could do was watch it turn up stream and disappear. Fishing on Wheeler though the next year or so at night and set the hook. Told my buddy I hung a limb until an extremely nice Diawa combo comes to the top. I think someone had lost it that night in the tournament or the previous day. It was spotless. It is still one of my favorites to cast today. Caught another one last year but it had been down a long time and was roached out.

Not me, but I was deep sea fishing a few years back and one of the guys accidentally threw his whole rod and reel in. Slipped out of his hand. I didn't know that this had happened. I heard the capt say y'all hold on to those rods. We were getting ready to move to another spot and was reeling up and had someones line on my hook. The deck hand no f ing way! He pulled in the rig and the captain shook my hand and said you got the best catch of the day. The rod and reel was around 1100.00. Capt shoulda comped that dudes trip!
The harder I practice, the luckier I get.

Yes but got it back. When I was a kid a catfish pulled my rod off the dock. My great grandaddy reached for it but couldn’t grab it. Later on the cork popped up. I paddled out in a Jon boat using my hands to paddle. I grabbed the cork and line. Pulled up the rod and then reeled in the fish

I had a Talica in the rod holder with a shark on. I’ve done this many times before with no problem but not this time. The shark got to the wrong angle and put too much pressure and the rod snapped below the reel. $800 gone overboard. I love sharks…. That probably costed a bunch of sharks their lives in the following days.

Kicked a nice bait caster over the side one time. Almost a year to the day was fishing in the same spot. Set the hook Wasn't a fish.. it was the same rod. 😃

He has tried to give me the rod several times but I always insist he is doing such a good job fighting them that he should continue the battle.

Seen several lost. As for me, lost one coming down the tower with a seventy something pound cobia on the Sea Spray in very rough seas. Thirty minutes later, Ricky McDuffie on the Sea Hunter gets on the radio and says I got your rod and fish John. They saw the fish and casted, didn’t feed, then caught the line while reeling in.
