I bought some cool old aluminum pans from a milsurp place.

They were smeared with cosmoline at some point. Is there a reasonable way to remove it? Would rather not kill the pans, and would prefer to cook with them at some point.

As a person who loves to cook, and as a person who has cleaned lots of cosmoline off of old military rifles, I can't help but think that no matter what you do it is going to leave a residual taste in those pans once you heat them up during cooking.

I hope I'm wrong.

When we had shafts covered with cosmoilne we used a “brake cleaner “ type of spray , not sure about cooking with it afterwards, I know it smelled awful if you cleaned metal with the spray and then welded on the part, guess you could scrape off the bulk of it and go from there.

I hope so also. These were from Coleman's, but I didn't realize they would have cosmoline on them. Once I get most off, I hap planned to boil water in them outside until it stayed clear.

Brake cleaner, mineral spirits, paint thinner, acetone, etc. Any solvent will work but if it's coated on the pans in a thick coating, you may have to use a scraper to get the biggest part of it off prior to using a solvent.

Just don't know that I'd use the pans for cooking afterwards

Unless it has been anodized, I would stay away from using aluminum pans. Lots of evidence that says its linked to Alzheimers.

Simple Green Crystal Industrial Cleaner or food grade mineral oil and baking soda and a little heat.

that would be my suggestion. Simple green. Maybe soaking in dish soap. Maybe even baking soda and vinegar.

I would stay away from brake cleaner. Its pretty toxic, especially when heated, it can be fatal.

I agree, I don't eat off of the parts that I clean with brake cleaner, but it does well for those parts.

i used to use it alot. There was a story about a guy dieing from it. I think it had some other chemical in this brake cleaner, cant remember. Dude was welding and sprayed it on while it was hot and it killed him on the spot. Kinda made me nervous about using it. None of that stuff is good for you but the video stuck in my head.

Good idea, plus you may want to add a bunch of salt to the water when it starts boiling, I'd prolly stay away from the brake cleaner...

I printed off the msds for a job and doesn't really have a bad classification. Guess I'll buy the dreaded N95's for using it.
