I’m considering planting a strip or two of wildflowers in my front yard against planted pines. There’s not a lot of centipede growth in the area yet. And will cut down on grass cutting time. Has anyone planted wildflowers in the yard? Pointers, suggestions?

Thanks

I've been planting natives. I gather the seeds and plant in the fall. Most natives wont germinate now if planted. They have to go through cold weather or you can cold start them in the fridge. I would start with some annuals this late.

Im about to plant a couple of small strips for our bees and garden. I cant help you on the planting. Im discing my ground. I also plan to pre emerge with Treflan. But i can help you on the price. I generally buy my flower seeds from American Meadows online. I found these seeds online at Walmart for about 1/10 the price about the same mix would cost at American Meadows. Ill post pics of how it turns out in a couple months

Jwalker, will that mix come back next year? Or is it done and you have to replant next year?

I’ve heard the ph and soil has to be just right. Sunlight has to be adequate and if you plant now you will see them next spring. The ones I’ve done have never done what I was hoping for but truth be told I treated them like a “ wild flower”. I’d be cautious of a pre emergent that may affect your flower seeds if you plant into that. Just a thought.

about half of those will work and bloom in your soil type. Its a shotgun approach sack. Those mixtures get bought by highway departments and municipalities for beautification projects.

Sure would. Wasn’t trying to be negative just surprised at such a low ratio and chance for having expectations met.

A lot of those won't germinate without going through a few weeks of cold
Cone flowers and blackened Susan's especially.

I plant a lot of wild flower mixes. I use only native varieties. Site preparation begins a year in advance. You’ve got to remove all grasses and competition with a minimum of two herbicide applications, each followed by a discing. So spray and disc after it’s dead. Then spray what comes up and disc again. Do this in late summer to early fall. After the first frost, spread your seed and lightly drag or just let the winter rains beat the seeds in. In Spring they’ll germinate. As cold trail said, a lot of that stuff needs either extreme cold or extreme heat scarification to initiate proper germination.

I plant bee feed mix from hoss. I plant them and sunflowers next to my produce feilds to help with pollination. Some come back some don't. The better the prep the better the stand, but I have tilled sod starting ingredients in late Feb or early March several times fertilize and have had pretty good luck, especially if you can water

Thats what im fixin to do. I bet itll be just fine. However, when i planted the wildflower mix a few years ago, i got the ground ready in the fall and sowed them then. I was kinda leary about that but they came right up when the ground got warm.
