I plant a lot of wild flower mixes. I use only native varieties. Site preparation begins a year in advance. You’ve got to remove all grasses and competition with a minimum of two herbicide applications, each followed by a discing. So spray and disc after it’s dead. Then spray what comes up and disc again. Do this in late summer to early fall. After the first frost, spread your seed and lightly drag or just let the winter rains beat the seeds in. In Spring they’ll germinate. As cold trail said, a lot of that stuff needs either extreme cold or extreme heat scarification to initiate proper germination. What’s best to prevent erosion between fall plant and spring germination? Throw straw on top?

There’s no shortage of winter annuals that usually pop up for soil stability.

I had a spot I wanted to plant. After this thread, I got the wife to order some perennial wild flowers. We'll see how it goes.
