Do this in late summer to early fall. After the first frost, spread your seed and lightly drag or just let the winter rains beat the seeds in. In Spring they’ll germinate. As cold trail said, a lot of that stuff needs either extreme cold or extreme heat scarification to initiate proper germination.

What’s best to prevent erosion between fall plant and spring germination? Throw straw on top?

In highly erodible land you can spread straw. I usually plant level ground. Hasn’t been an issue. There’s no shortage of winter annuals that usually pop up for soil stability.

I had a spot I wanted to plant. After this thread, I got the wife to order some perennial wild flowers. We'll see how it goes.

We have ordered seeds from Wildflower Seed in Fredricksberg Texas. This was years ago, but I think they are still doing business the same as before. They would sell you any type of wildflower seed, but preferred to sell according to the region of the country you live. They had a mix we ordered, and it did very well where we planted in south Baldwin County.
As stated earlier, the first season, the flowers were thick. A strip around 16 ft x 150 ft had way more growth than I expected. Each year they got thinner. Few small verities still pop up where that seed bed was and I think they were planted around six or seven years ago.
Those seeds weren’t cheap, but a little goes a long way.
