Ran across this today and wondered if anyone knew what would do this? There were two, maybe 100 yards apart, both the same size. From a distance, I thought they were giant rubs, but it almost looks like teeth marks. It does look like a deer rubbed it down low, but do deer eat sumac bark? The tops and bottoms almost look like they were cut with a knife. Any ideas? Sasquatch?

No clue. But if you go back you will need a bigger gun.

It’s not claw marks.

A friend of mine says it looks like porcupine sign. Anyone ever seen a porcupine in north Alabama?

Porcupine would fit the bill, but they aren’t supposed to be here. Are the marks small enough to be from a squirrel? If not, deer would be my guess.

I read an article awhile back that said porcupines are being found further south than in the past.

Seen several in Bankhead.

Really? Ive been around in that forest since the 90's and have never heard of a sighting. How recent? I did see them in S. Dakota. My buddy made the mistake of trying to roll over a road kill one with his boot. FYI the barbs will stick in boots, said boots will leak afterwards.

Looks like a damn good place for a trail cam. Don't underestimate a beaver, they can climb a tree.

Looks like a porcupine has been eating on the bark. Kinda doubt there are any around these parts but that’s certainly what it looks like.
