It’s not claw marks.
A friend of mine says it looks like porcupine sign. Anyone ever seen a porcupine in north Alabama? Seen several in Bankhead. Really? Ive been around in that forest since the 90's and have never heard of a sighting. How recent? I did see them in S. Dakota. My buddy made the mistake of trying to roll over a road kill one with his boot. FYI the barbs will stick in boots, said boots will leak afterwards. The one I remember best was near the horse camp. We were riding the yellow loop. Think I have seen three. 2003ish.

Are you sure it wasn’t a groundhog or something??....Typically there needs to be quite a few individuals of a specie to exist in an area to sustain a population…..That’s why all of the sasquatch sightings in the lower 48 are likely not credible…..You have to go somewhere like northern Canada or Russia for there to be enough remote habitat to sustain squatch populations
