Can someone simplify Trump's goal with imposing the tariffs?

This was a good article explaining it.

Basically the threat of tariffs makes other countries want to negotiate a better deal.
What we have now not is a deal for the US.

They are in place to do one or all of three things:

1. Force countries to play fair. Meaning: Place the same restrictions or lack of restrictions on our country's goods that we place on goods from their country.
2. To encourage countries to invest business infrastructure in the US. Such as some many car companies did in the American South. This is why we have BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, etc... building cars here.
3. Sometimes it's to get a country to wake up and quite shipping illegal drugs, goods and people over here. I'm talking places like China & Mexico

I'm no statesman, but that's my understanding of it.

Boost revenue for the US government (import tax) - that is ultimately the end result.

It is probably his hope to move more production to the US and buy “Made in the USA”. He is also banking on a more equitable trade deficit.

At the end of the day - the consumer pays the tax for imported goods, as businesses passes along the increase of cost of goods.

So will the market rebound theoretically?

I just heard one guy saying 12 months after bear market typically the market is 29% higher. So we’re down 20% now, so basically a 9% gain.

That’s a yes and no question. No we will take a beating in the short term. Yes 6 to 8 months when the companies start showing more profits it’s a win. Do not watch the market everyday. It will drive you crazy. Hey I’m just a dumb country boy. My take.

Another affect of the market being down is it will in turn drive the fed to reduce interest rates, it also boost the bond market. The US also has a couple trillion coming due in the next few months. Lower interest rates will allow us to refi on those loans at better rates.
Lots of good "can" come from this.

That's right, there's a lot of pieces to this puzzle. If they all fall into place it will be a beautiful picture. Making the tax cuts permanent and doge doing what doge does are pieces also.

I dont see where the fuss is myself. Have any of yall really lost money ?

From my understanding, one only loses if they sell at a loss. If one can let it ride, it will come back up, unless one bought at an inflated cost in the first place.

110 thousand so far out of my 401K.

That's not lost money unless you cash it out but even then it may not be a loss...how much money have you "made" from your 401k over the years? I'm still way up if you consider all time.

Is that less or lost is a difference . This im trying to understand . You put in $100 it builds to 150 then drops to 125 how is that a lost ?

lol. Because you have 25 dollars less today than you had last Monday. Doesn’t matter if it’s in a bucket or on a computer screen. Everybody’s situation is different. If you’re a younger person and working/contributing to a 401k, this is a gift. If you’re older and getting ready to retire, not so much
