Just bought an older truck for my son. Truck in good shape, but clear coat is flaking and paint faded on hood. Trying to get advice on how to possibly replace clear coat. I’ve seen some products that will work, but don’t really know best way to prepare surface. Would I sand existing clear coat off? Buff with a product? Never been a detailer on vehicles. What are some steps needed before putting on a clear coat???

There is some stuff out there that will help sun damaged clear coat. You have to put it on about every 6 months to a year. If it’s flaking though it’s over with. Sand and re coat it. If you ever use that stuff, you'll never paint it. It's all pretty much a silicone coating. It gets soaked in and is almost impossible to get out for paint prep.

Silicone is a very bad word in auto painting.

I have the same on my truck. Everyone I talked to said sand and repaint or reapply a clear coat.
