Yes sir ! And glad to see somebody that recognizes beans in chili as traditional Bama style ! If you look at it logically and historically, they probably had beans at just about every meal. So more than likely Chili took on many forms and more than likely chunky beef, pork, lamb, or venison chili was often served with beans, but in the early days the beans were not combined with the chili until it all hit the plate. Then it was served with either tortillas, cornbread or biscuits, depending on the region of Texas and whoever the cook was and their cooking background. Ground beef in Chili probably came quite a bit later. Ground beef did not become popular until the very late 1800's and early 1900's and by then Chili had been being made in some form or another for quite a while with the concept coming from immigrants from the Canary Islands and the spices coming from the native Meso-Americans. "While the exact origin of chili with beans is debated, it's widely believed to have evolved from chili-based dishes in Texas-Mexico border towns and possibly from Canary Island immigrants settling in San Antonio. The dish gained popularity in the 1880s with the rise of chili stands, and was further popularized at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. By the 1920s, recipes for chili included beans, and by the 1940s, tomatoes were a common addition. "
